| I surely would appreciate a book about roses that I could use to identify mystery roses in my garden. The book should have as many pictures as possible.
Had hoped to learn digital photography so I could post some of my mystery roses here but this will not be occurring anytime soon. Perhaps this fall I may be able to sign up for a few classes. Hope breeds eternal. Please suggest any titles that you find helpful. Thank you. Jeannie |

| Encyclopedia of Roses by The American Rose Society has lots of pictures...the thing is though, it doesn't always show the foliage-which is very important in identifying them. Helpmefind is great because lots of people will post pictures of the leaflets, buds, hips, thorns, canes, new growth, etc. It's so hard to tell by the bloom alone-I find the color of the bloom changes with temps, location, etc. The Graham Stuart Rose Book has some very detailed pictues-but not as many. Hopefully someone here can give you better advice. How many are there? I just moved into a new home with a few large ramblers, so far all I know about them is that they are not multiflora. Can't wait until they bloom. |

| I second Altorama's suggestion of Encyclopedia of Roses. I enjoyed the 2011 edition of it so much, that I reluctantly returned it to the library. I posted a previous thread about that reference book. I also read Bonica Rose Reference - not crazy about this one. If I have any mystery rose, I would go to "Encyclopedia of Roses". It describes in detail the foliage, the thorns/thistle, height & width, the form of bloom, and whether the leaves are reddish when young. The photography is impeccable. |

| how many mystery roses do you have and do you know where they were bought from...? that might help you place them. Rogue Valley Roses for example has an advanced search on their site where you can search by color and bloom type... and you can also email photos to the vendor or post them here. and you can do an advanced search on helpmefind as well, but it can be a bit tough to go through all the choices. but I rather like having a big hardcopy book of roses anyway. |

| Thank you for the suggestions and the ideas. Some of the mystery roses are from RVR but most of them are from friends and members of our church who gave me cuttings and succers when I began the garden 2-3 years ago. I expect that the cuttings are modern in nature although they assure me that they are old...we shall see. I'll see about getting the Encyclopedia of Roses...sure looks like a great idea. Thanks again would never have thought of that one. Jeannie |
