Tell me about these reds

I was looking at the short bush category on ARE's webspage and a couple of the reds/dark pinks caught my attention.
Can you tell me about their disease resistance, whether they bloom alot, the size of the bush, and whether it's a must have rose or not.

Fancis Dubreiul
Dame de Coeur
John Franklin
Parfum de l' hay

I remember hearing that Francis Dubreiul would crisp in the heat. Will any of these handle the heat any better?

Dame de Coeur - a perfect red rose for Texas Heat and Humidity - and I mean perfect. She stays small; never needs spraying even if I choose to spray and just keeps on poping out those blackred blooms - no fragrance though.

Francis does indeed turn crispy in our heat and bright sun. However, I am told that if you give it some afternoon shade to protect it some, it will do great for you. I have recently moved mine to a giant pot on the southeast side of the house. We shall see how he does this summer! Even if it still gets sun damage, it is worth growing for the marvelous fragrance! In case you are interested, many people think that this rose is not actually Francis Dubreuil, but the older hybrid tea rose named Barcelona. No one has confirmed that yet to my knowledge.

FD would do well if you have a site with afternoon shade.
Dame de Coeur would be perfect, no problems expected. It lacks scent, though. I grow it anyway.

I lack any experience with the other two.

Olga,

Just how wide and tall? I want to make sure she'll fit in the spot I have planned.

I grow Francis in afternoon shade and he crisps anyway. But I consider that a feature, not a flaw. Since I know he's going to be toast by mid-afternoon, that gives me the excuse to cut him first thing in the morning and enjoy that amazing fragrance in the house all day.

I had John Franklin for a few years. When they (2) began to weaken, I asked about them, and was told on another forum that the rose was older, and had been replaced in popularity by some others.

I finally dug mine up and replaced them.

Fragrance is nice, but I usually end up getting rid of any rose that crisp or falls apart the first day it opens, so it's sounding like Dame de Coeur is the best choice for me.
Thanks!

see her Redness from faraway. And she doesn't get Sicky like other's. olgaflowers

Wow! What a lovely rose, Rozannadanna! I'm putting Dame du Coeur on my wish list for next season.

In the meantime, msrose, I am a big supporter of Henry Nevard. The red, red, rose of your greatgrandmother's garden, and as fragrant as a red rose SHOULD be, but often is not. He is a Hybrid Perpetual that has a June flush, then blooms on and off for me in hot, humid South Jersey Cape weather. He's about 5', maybe a little less. The blooms last for days in a vase.

I grow Francis in zone 8. She has sun in AM and afternoon shade. I love this rose. She is very fragrant. I was considering Dame De Coeur but if she has no fragrance, I will pass. Chrysler Imperial is a wonderful red rose.

RE: Tell me about these reds

For me, 'Chrysler Imperial' is THE red rose, the high standard to which all others are compared (and fall short). After a lapse of about a quarter century or so, I once again have 'Climbing Chrysler Imperial', which was one of the roses I grew up with and so lived with for about twenty years. A million thanks to Vintage Gardens for being able to supply this very-hard-to-obtain 'Cl. Chrysler Imperial' to me! (And I'm happy to state that, though the plant is young, it's strong, already a yard tall.)

Interestingly HMF claims Dame de Coeur is very fragrant! (?)

I added Dame de Coeur to my garden this year and she has taken off. Always in bloom and she does have a slight fragrance. She is a wonderful healthy rose.
