Best Roses for Pot Garden

Last year, when we decided to remain in our current city a little longer, my mission became the beautification of my yard, patio and balcony. I thought I was done, but you people are enablers!!! All those gorgeous rose and garden images.

Months ago, I went on record with " I am not one to grow things in pots, I want to plant it and be done with it". I ran out of permanent real estate for roses and started growing roses in pots.... I currently have nine roses growing in decorative pots and want more. My local nursery is even having 25% off on decorative pots. I would say its kismet.

Which roses have you successfully grown in pots? Do you have any special potting soil that works for you, or suggestions for forum members hoping like me to expand their garden into the pot culture, " no pun intended".

I have quite a few but Little White Lies is one of my favorites. I will just do one and let others do theirs. That way you have a collection from which to choose.

Patricia,

Right now I have Ballerina, Young Lycidas, Reine des Violettes, South Africa, EVS ,Golden Celebration, The Prince and 2 small white roses... I forget the name, growing in pots. I usually try to select smaller roses for pots but clearly have failed in that, so the larger bushes end up in rather large pots. I pot them in M.G. or. Soil for desert climates mixed with a little compost.

Out of the 14 different classes of rose that I've grown in pots, one class bloomed better than the others: Polyantha
Mlle. Cecille Brunner
Perle d'Or'
Marie Pavie' Be sure you get the real one, there is a ho-hum imposter that is a boring Florabunda sold under the same name. I've grown them both, the real Marie Pavie is quite fragrant and has smaller flowers and reddish pedicles.
'Little White Pet'
'The Fairy' in a pot, the canes arch beautifully.
Good luck with your pot garden. My neighbor grew a dozen or so miniature roses in pots successfully. I didn't care for the brush like growth habit, of most of them. But what ever you like is best.

Lux is absolutely correct. The poly's are happy in containers and bloom prolifically there.
Here's a pic of the polyantha 'Marie Pavie' this Easter morning on my back patio. And yes, her fragrance this morning is excellent.

I've grown practically every class of rose there is in pots and they all do fine as long as the pot is large enough. Generally potted roses require watering more often because they dry out faster than the ground and they require more frequent fertilizing because there is some nutrient loss from the drainage. Otherwise they grow just like the rest of my roses in the ground.

I have recently become interested in miniature roses in pots, so that's what I'd recommend. I have no particular name though -- at this point, they are just using some generic name of "miniature roses".

The rose in commerce as Eugene de Beauharnais will stay small and grow slowly if propagated on its own roots. I've had some in a < 2 gallon pot for 4 years, and it's doing just fine there. I'll eventually transplant it to something a bit larger, but don't think it (on its own roots) would ever outgrow a 5 gallon pot.

Pink Pet makes a fantastic potted rose.

Ken-n.ga.mts,

Ooooh, I can envision Pink Pet in a pot. I have White Pet planted as edging and have been quite impressed with it. It always has blooms and is easy to deadhead too.

Rose de Rescht is very happy in a pot. I had it in a 7 gallon for a number of years and just transplanted to a 20 gallon so it has room to sucker. Glorious fragrance.
