Wow - that is so interesting! I tried to wrap a rose around a rose folly once, and it did not like it at all. Too stiff, I think. It grew up to the top of the rose folly and then escaped happily over to an arch on which another rose was growing.

Next time I may try this way - thanks very much!

It is a good way to go for stiff roses i think, actually not much different from what i do. But you don't have to be that exact, every rose has it's own way of growing so guide it, don't force it.
Also what i do is when in summer a new shoot go's the wrong way, i cut it, i don't wait untill spring. Only downside is that i lose some roses.
