I'm going to try two roses on rebar tepees--each 8 feet tall. Suggestions? I have three climbers looking for a home...Don Juan, Sombreuil, and New Dawn--would these work? Also, how do I keep the canes in place on the rebar? That is, how do I keep them from sliding down the rebar after I tie them on? Thank you!! Rosefool aka Karen

I think those climbers might be too big for your purpose. You might be better with something of pillar-rose growth habit -- this can include some of the long-caned Bourbons or Hybrid Perpetuals or others that grow similarly. There are quite a few David Austin roses which have an arching habit and grow large, allowing them to be used as a small climber -- 'Abraham Darby' and 'Golden Celebration' come to mind (because I have these two), but there are others. I think if you tie the canes in two spots on different pieces of rebar, they should hold in place. Try to think of training it as though it's on a pillar, but in a looser spiral -- you'll want the canes to sort of wrap around the rebar sort of perpendicular to each, rather than have them grow straight up and parallel to the rebar. :-) ~Christopher

Actually, now that I think about it, 'Don Juan' might be ok -- I don't think it gets as big as the other two, but don't quote me on that. :-) ~Christopher

| Karen, Just to add a little to what Christopher has aptly said - another thing to consider when choosing a rose to pillar or to teepee, is the number or thorns and the stiffness of the canes. Both New Dawn and Sombreuil have very thorny canes that become stiff and are both massive roses at maturity. I found an old picture of some bare canes of New Dawn taken in January of 2009. I had this rose growing at the base of a deck and I tied the canes laterally along the deck railing. I pruned it quite a bit through the year and in early spring when I re-tied it. I think it worked okay only because I was working I don't know Don Juan so have no opinion about it. I also thought, if you haven't seen this, that maybe this you-tube by Paul Zimmerman would help. He shows how to pillar a rose and makes note of what kind of rose works with this treatment. If you've seen this, please excuse me. Good luck. I loved ND when I grew it, but it's a big thorny beast. | Sombreuil can get pretty huge and New Dawn can eat houses so I don't think you'd ever be able to confine them to a tepee. |

I would suggest Don Juan. I have him on one side of a arch (those cheap ones you find at the craft store that come with mini lights for Christmas) He reaches the top half of the arch but never makes it any further. Which is good because he sets giant hips and it would be hard to dead head if he was taller.

I don't think you need to worry about Don Juan getting too big (or living too long). I planted ten, in '05, and there is ONE left alive in that garden - barely hanging on, in a border where the ten New Dawns I planted are monsters - monsters bridging the gap between the conifer screen where they're planted, and the perimeter fence - jumping eight feet over that fence before anyone catches them doing so, and snatching the neighbor off his riding mower with their thorns (he was SO glad when we moved...). The surgeons who bought the house from us were terrified of lawsuits which might arise from Rosa Laevigata's and New Dawn's thorny tentacles. But the pair of Attorneys who bought the house from them are less worried. Anyway, in Zone 8, New Dawn will be a go-getter (go get the neighbors), and Don Juan will be a stunted invalid - but with blooms that last for a really long time on the bush.

I've seen Little Buckeroo grown up a cedar post teepee & it was beautiful. I think it was in an old ARE catalog. Someday I'm gonna do that.
