Violette Hood

Hello. Does anyone grow this rose? I have conflicting info on whether she repeats or not? As always, the Iphone doesn't capture the depth of the purple....very pretty! So far she is healthy, but my other Lens rose, Verdi, is looking really nasty right now.

Yes Susan, it does repeat. It happens in flushes with distinct pauses between, but you can reasonably expect three (or more) flushes per year. It isn't particularly vigorous, though, so expect to treat it accordingly. I've also found it to be less frost hardy than other multiflora/poly types I've grown.

I grow this and I like it. As Paul said, it definitely flowers in flushes. The blue-green foliage is a nice contrast with the purple flowers.

It's probably my dry heat, but Violet Hood had very small and very dull-looking flowers in my garden. If I had this rose now I'd plant it where it has afternoon shade instead of the full sun I gave it. Yours looks much prettier, Susan, with a much more vivid color.

I've had it since the mid nineties when it was one of quite a few roses the Lens Nursery sent as "thank yous" for garbage bags full of things I sent over with a friend who traveled back and forth regularly. It's a fairly typical hybrid multiflora, which means it hates the SoCal soil, water, aridity and heat. I've had all the violet Lens hybrid multifloras and I've only retained Rosy Purple, Jet Flame and Violet Hood as the best and most interesting for my garden. Violet Hood is the clearest purple here of the lot. Sibelius and Verdi are nice, but not as "violet" here, so they have gone on to other gardens where they are happier. I think the repeat is going to depend on the climate quite a bit. When it gets HOT (mid nineties and higher), it stops flowering here. The only one which is regular with the flowering in higher temps is Jet Flame. Kim
