 o
Is this Mme Joseph Schwartz?

I received my bands from Burlington this week and the rose labeled Joseph Schwartz has this bloom on it. It is tiny and opens flat with a button eye. Not at all what I thought it should look like. I also have Marie pavie in the same order. Could it just be immature?

Mine never looked like that, even when small, but perhaps climate?

RE: Is this Mme Joseph Schwartz?

No. This does not look like any Mme J Schwartz I ever saw.

Is your rose Quietness.

 o

That looks more like Marie Pavie.

I may be mistaken, but that sure looks like Marie Pavie--not at all like Mme Schwartz.

I was thinking she might have mixed up the labels when she set them aside, but does Marie Pavie have that green center? From photos I've seen it seems more of a yellow center to me. Well, I've emailed her the photo so I'll see what she says.

Maybe the labels are mixed up.

Has your other plant bloomed yet? I've never had MJS before, but I had the sport parent, Duchesse de Brabant. DdB has rather distinctive foiliage with a wavy edge to the leaflets. MJS should have the same.

Melody.inz8a,

I have the same rose, from the same place and I believe it has the same appearance. I too have doubts. Mine was purchased last Fall. If there are any blooms on it right now I will take an image and post tomorrow .

Mine appears a little different from yours, but not what I expected for this rose. The blooms are about 1 - 1 1/4 ", but they are the first; maybe they will change.

I would contact her with the image posted.

The close-up showing the coloring is evidence that this could be the correct rose. Btw, I have new Marie Pavie too and it looks more like your image.

My Marie Pavie opens up to a cheerful yellow eye, never green. I don't think its MP.

Lynne,
That is interesting about your rose. Yours looks very similar to mine. I wonder if Burlington is selling the wrong rose.
Altogether I'm not impressed with the nursery. She sent 5 roses in one box and half of the canes were broken from being squished into a too small box. Oh, well. They'll come back eventually.
Well, if she's not rooting the correct Joseph Schwartz now I have to decide if I pay to order it from elsewhere.

Melodyinz8a,

I have ordered many roses from her and have always received very healthy, nice sized plants. The color of my rose and petal appearance seem to be consistent with Mme. Joseph Schwartz, but the green button eye is what is causing doubt. I have never seen this rose in person and am relying upon images and descriptions from those familiar with this rose. I hope it is the correct rose and do not relish the idea of having unknown roses in my garden.

Last year I went to Roses Unlimited to pick up my order. my Evelyn most certainly didn't look like an Evelyn, the coloring wasn't right at all, and while the bloom was just opening it didn't even look like it was the right shape. When I suggested that may not be Evelyn Stephanie just grabbed some scissors and clipped off the bloom. She stated sometimes a bloom in a greenhouse can be distorted. She assured me it was Evelyn, but if I got it home and the next bloom was wrong she would replace. Sure enough, the next flower was most definitly Evelyn! Hopefully this may have happened to you too?

UPDATE:
I received an email from Burling today about the rose I purchased labeled as Mme Joseph Schwartz from her. She said she now believes it is Caroline Marniesse and from photos online I think it's a perfect match. She said that her stock rose is mislabeled. I am really impressed with her customer service!!
So I know you, Lynn, have the same rose and now you know what your rose is too!

Burling is SO GOOD.

Melody,

Thank you for the update. I am not familiar with Caroline Marniesse, and there is not a wealth of information or an abundance of images that I've been able to find online. I suspect that it may have the propensity to mature into a plant considerably larger than Mme. Joseph Schwartz. It seems very happy in my garden, so I have decided to wait and see how it performs long term.

I just placed my order with Burling, not for this rose, but a few others. She is very nice to work with.
