This is my one year old Madame Pierre Oger that I transplanted today. First, I have to say: Wow - what an unexpectedly vigorous and hardy plant! I'd fallen in love with photos of the blossoms but almost didn't get her because I'd gotten the impression she was a wimpy plant. She grew like a weed and it was obvious that she was not destined to be the free standing shrub that I imagined, so I decided this year I'd move her and let her grow as a climber. I'm amazed at the winter survival, she's certainly the least damaged rose in my entire garden. I snipped off about an inch of the tips. Zero winter protection, and she was previously in an open and windy location. Back to my question. As I said I transplanted her today. Would you cut her back? Seems a shame to cut off all that growth that survived the winter, but I don't want to overstress the plant. The height is about 6 1/2 feet.

Personally, I think I'd cut it back to about 2 ft. There are damaged parts that should be removed, and that would even it up.

She looks terrific for having survived this awful winter. Cut off any damaged wood down to where there is good clear pith in the center and then if you want you can do some shaping but otherwise I'd let her grow!

Good advice above about cutting off the winter damage. Maybe balance prune just very lightly. If longish canes aren't damaged, I wouldn't prune them much. Madame is young. Train her by fanning her along your fence. She's a lovely climber! If you fan the canes, she'll bloom all along them. The horizontal training encourages prolific flowering. She's going to knock your socks off! :-). Carol
