Molineux outgrowing its pot

Hi all,
I have a large and very vigorous Molineux growing in a 20" pot. The other day I lifted it up and noticed one long, thin but strong-looking root coming out of the bottom drain hole.
Should I put it in the ground? Now? Or wait?
I know I thought you're not supposed to transplant during growing season, but I wonder if this is a different situation. The plant is blooming like crazy.
Thanks,
Sylvia

In your place I would absolutely plant it right now.

In my mild winter climate I plant roses all year long. Gardeners who live in a climate with freezing winters are restricted to planting in spring and fall. Those in hot climates want to avoid peak heat, especially when transplanting established roses from one garden location to another (though I have done it, and sometimes even with success). However I see no reason a zone 10 gardener should not plant a potted rose anytime at all. Just keep it well watered until it adjusts to its new environment.

Anyway I'm pretty sure that rule about not planting during the growing season is intended for bare root roses that are sold dormant. It should not apply to roses in pots.

I would wait for it to finish it's bloom Obviously it isn't stressed in the pot if it's producing such a good bloom.

If you are not ready to plant it yet there is a procedure called root pruning where you pull the root ball, cut it back and then repot with fresh soil. It's a job but can be done.

Planting a potted rose should be no problem at any time if you don't disturb the root ball. It should go right in whole and not even notice a change. Just keep it watered. I think that rule is more for digging out a planted rose and moving it where you would be doing some damage to the root ball in the process.

Thank you! I am enlightened. I'll put Moli in the ground .. ahh, as soon as I figure out where he should go. Anyone know how this rose reacts to all-day sun and scorching dry heat?
That would be the front yard. He's currently in the back, with six hours of good sun and some afternoon shade. Since he's thriving there, I'd leave him, but I'm running out of rose room in the back. (Sigh) guess it's time to tear out some more succulents. Wherever they grow, roses will, I should think.
Thanks again! This forum is so much better than playing internet roulette -- a whole wheel of assorted advice and suggestions, all from different people, and you never know if the one you land on is talking sense or talking through his/her sun hat. Glad I quit that casino. :)
