What hardware to use on fence for climber?

I'm sure this has been covered, but I cannot find where. My question is what, exactly, do I attach to my wooden privacy fence so I can train climbers onto it? This year--New Dawn and Don Juan. Next year--Mermaid.

Thank you!

Put hook screws (or whatever they are called) in the fence at intervals, with the open sides facing up and then run wires through them, so that the fence becomes like the neck of a guitar. Secured at the ends - and not installed in too long sections - the weight of the plants should keep the wires in position.

Otherwise you could use eye hooks.

When you use hooks that are open on one side you can actually dismount the wires, let the plants flop over (unless too stiffly stemmed) in case you need to get at the fence for maintenance or repairs.

If you use wires these do not show up like a trellis, do not age and deteriorate like a wooden trellis. And since you already have a fence a trellis put on the front is kind of redundant. Even the metal ones - which are not going to be cheap - will also tend to have sections you don't need.
