 o
Mlle. Cecile Brunner in a pot?

I received my rose order a couple of weeks ago now and they're all looking really wonderful - particularly Lady Hillingdon!

One of the roses in my order was Mlle. Cecile Brunner - NOT the climbing form. It appears to be such a petite rose that I thought it might be an ideal rose to keep permanently in a container.

HMF give the dimensions as short ( 2 - 4 feet) with a spread of 2 feet - certainly sounds a suitable candidate for pot culture.

I'm just a little concerned because my roses seem to grow almost twice as large as the maximum given dimensions for e.g. David Austin roses.

Could anyone who grows the bush form of Mlle. Cecile Brunner provide advice on their experience of her eventual height and spread?

Many thanks
Tricia

Tricia -- I have seen old, mature plants of 'Mlle Cecile Brunner' in old cemeteries, that stand 7-ft. or more tall, and a good 5-ft. wide. At least.

It is a WONDERFUL little ever-blooming rose. In a Z-9 climate, you can for sure keep it in a container for a few years, but unless you have a REALLY REALLY big container, I'd plan to put it into the ground at some point.

Jerijen, thank you for your advice. I was wondering whether the Mlle. Cecile Brunner at my friend's farm might have been the 'Spray' version, because it is so large (it's definitely not the climbing version). We worked out that her Mlle. Cecile was probably planted when the house was built, shortly after the end of World War 2.

Here is a shot I took in March of the 'trunk' of her Mme. Cecile - it reaches to the eaves of the house!

I simply couldn't imagine that my little plant would ever reach these gargantuan proportions!

Cheers

I meant to also post a photo of the Mlle. Cecile rose bush -

here it is …

Does your friend's plant repeat? You often see the climber pruned down to Shrub size.

And then, of course, there is spray Cecile Brunner.

The original rose might stay in the 4-ft. range in some climates, but in CA -- over a long period of time, it can get to be startlingly large. Hardly surprising! MOST roses, given time and not pruned much, get pretty big, here.

I know one Perle d'Or, in an old NoCal cemetery, that is enormous, and it was only planted in the late 50's or early 60's. Beautiful thing! See att.

Yes, it repeats - in fact it seems to almost never be without a bloom. Her Zone is probably pretty close to 9 - although Summer can be blisteringly hot and always very dry - vicious frosts in Winter but no snow - probably not colder than an average of minus 5 degrees (Celsius).

That is a really glorious rose in your photo - is it Mlle. Cecile or Perle d'Or?

I would definitely put it in the ground. I have the bush form of CB, and it is 7 ft tall by 4 ft wide.

Hi Jackie, can I ask how long it took for your rose to get to that size? At the moment my plant is about 12 inches tall in a 2.5 litre pot - it's own root, if that makes any difference to its ultimate height.

Here's a photo -

Tricia -- the rose in the photo is Perle d'Or -- but the Mlle. would be of comparable size. So -- while you might keep it in a pot for a while (I have 'White Cecile Brunner' in a pot, temporarily.) it should eventually be in the ground, just as Jackie says.

Tricia - I did not buy mine. It was in my old garden when we moved in, consisting of one stick about 2 feet high, in deepest, darkest, shade. Never bloomed, the stick died each year, and one more small cane would emerge and sit there. I eventually took pity on it and moved it into the sun, and after I did that it exploded into growth, turned out to be CB, and reached its ultimate height & width in less than 2 years.

Wow Jackie, that's a very impressive 'growth spurt' - it must have been extremely grateful to you for liberating it from the deep, dark shade :-)
