Erfurt and hybrid musks

My roses are blooming, and many are very pretty even though I am still playing "catch up" as far as preparing my garden to even begin to look decent.

Yesterday I took a good look at my hybrid musks, and realized how very pretty they are together. I have always enjoyed my three Penelope roses together, but I have a triangle of Erfurt, Penelope, and Nur Mahal all blooming at the same time. Each one is unique. Nur Mahal is brighter than the others, Erfurt is a unique form and color, and Penelope is pretty old to me, but very pretty in the spring. By summer, Penelope is still pretty and huge, but loses the yellow tinge it has in the spring.

Since I just used Round Up on Saturday to clear out so many weeds, any pictures would take time, and not show what I saw by just looking at the roses and ignoring the surrounding weeds.

We often discuss Penelope and Ballerina, and one of the men (I forget who it is) used to promote Nur Mahal, but I do not recall many discussions about Erfurt. It is terribly thorny, but absolutely beautiful. I have about 8 roses that I am using to replace the ones lost, and am now trying to decide how I can put the new Erfurt near the old one.

I almost forgot to mention Bubble Bath, another hybrid musk. Bubble Bath arches near a bed of SDLM. I find that also to be a pretty display.

I do hope you can post pictures soon ! I love love love hybrid musks . I had most you named in Pennsylvania , but only had about 2 seasons with them and never got to see them mature. I have purchased a few to start over again in tennesee with. I love how large they get and are so fragrant and not fussy !!
Just how far do you space them ? I must start planning that soon. Things get so much bigger down here!

I love the flower of Erfurt but the plant has always been puny in my garden.

Nur Mahal and Felicia are my favorites (today) did you see my Felicia flush in my photo album? Also Aptos? A Lens musk? I have Cornelia and Francesca new to my garden this year and cannot wait to see them bloom. I definitely want to see photos....and I sure don't care about weeds. If I can find room I'd like to have Erfurt, Penelope and Clytemnestra!

Escapade might be a floribunda you'd like if you enjoy the look of Erfurt's flower, Susan. Aptos isn't a Lens rose. It's gorgeous, well scented, healthy, vigorous and roots QUITE easily. I've grown that for many years. It tip roots itself in any surrounding can it can invade. I've spread quite a few Aptos around over the years. Felicia has put out a spectacular display here this spring, too. The link below is to a friend's open garden a few weeks ago. She's just over the ridge from the ocean. The roses were clean and in full explosion. There are three shots of this from different angles. Hybrid Musks can get QUITE large here. Kim

No disrespect meant, but I cringe when I see people are still using ROUNDUP. There have been so many articles published recently regarding the harmful effects of this product to humans and the environment.

Vinegar as a weed killer is effective and safe for the environment.

Thanks, Lily. I give my hybrid musks plenty of room. The three in one bed are quite old, and they do tend to run into each other, but other roses are a few feet away.

Mariannese, my Erfurt seems to be ok as a plant, but does not grow as high as the others. I may be sorry that i put it as close to other roses as I have.

Susan, i need to go back and look at your Felicia. I love to look at other gardeners' flowers, but Nashville is special to me since we lived there for eight years before moving to Tulsa. The two cities are quite similar in weather, and growth habits. I often wonder how Nashville has changed. We lived in a housing area near Priest Lake.

Roseseek, that Felicia is huge. I am not familiar with Aptos, and will look it up.

Fogrose, thanks for the warning. Round Up used to be considered safe, then the subject of genetic engineered crops became an issue, and all warnings of Round Up have been linked together. I use it to clear the walking paths. Little by little I am covering the areas with landscape fabric and large stones. Since I will not touch an insecticide or other products that I know will hurt the environment, I do not want to cause harm to me or the birds or bees. The links that i see that have proof that Round Up will cause harm have to do with it being used on food. My weeds that are getting Round Up go in the trash. I appreciate your concern, though. We sure have no guarantees.

Kim, thanks for sharing the photo of Felicia! I don't have quite that much room. Mine is only in her true first year and is grafted to fortuniana....I am really enjoying Aptos. Why did I think it was Lens? I am always screwing something up. LOL.
Sammy, I do love Nashville. You can't believe how it has grown and changed!
And I agree with Fogrose. Check out my album. I've got so many companions for my roses they smother the weeds and make life so much easier on this gardener. I am going to give Erfurt a try one day.

Are some of the Hybrid Musks as shade tolerant as people say?

How about Aptos? I was reading about that one being especially good for some in shady areas. (I went to HS in Aptos)

RE: Erfurt and hybrid musks

Multiflora gives them a greater degree of tolerance than say traditional HTs, yes. It's where Sally Holmes and Iceberg got their shade tolerance from. It's also where they inherited their greater tendency to mildew. Aptos is actually a very nice rose. Think of it as a shade tolerant, small flowered Noisette and you probably have a good idea of what to expect from it. Aptos is throwing itself through the lilac into the black walnut, looking for other pots to root itself in. Even after being fried yesterday and the breeze continuing out back, there is still a snoot full of multiflora scent from the opening blooms. Kim
