Rose Hospital

It is so difficult to decide whether to replace a rose or give it a chance to grow.

Our winter was the worst ever. I have never had to turn on the water when it has been freezing, and did not plan ahead to get it done. We had some pretty days, but not many. I now wish i had purchased a special hose, and kept it inside. For the days that were ok, I could have hooked it up, and could have soaked my roses. I have somewhere around 130 rose bushes, and they needed water. I think they could have survived the winter had I just watered even every 3 weeks.

Now as i have been cutting down the ones that are in the back, I see that there is new growth. I thought they had been lost, but wonder if they will survive. Some of my SDLM are so weak that I would like to just start over with another rose, yet want to give them a chance.

I teach school for another 3 weeks, then am free for the rest of my life. The retirement is not a reality since it is not here yet, but I will have more time next winter to do what I want. I will be able to use that extra hose or even hand carry water to the plants.

The roses are all own root. I wish I knew whether i could strengthen a rose or whether it is just putting out a last effort before it stops trying to do anything. In the next few weeks it will get so hot, that planting new roses will be difficult ---- however, they are in pots in front of my house.

As I write this, I realize that I won't do much of anything until next weekend, then I will have 10 days to go.

Sammy

Don't give up! Those roses may sprout back from the roots and grow vigorously. Just give them a chance.

Sammy ...

Roses seem to often surprise me in their ability to survive.

The other night I was weeding and saw this little rose in the middle of a pile of rocks I had dumped in the hole where I had removed a rose and transplanted to another part of the garden last spring.

I never watered this little thing or fed it because I didn't know it was there.

The original rose was transplanted in this spot when day temps were in the triple digits.

Lyn

Porkpal and Lyn, thanks for encouraging me to give them a chance.

Jeri, I have been working way past retirement age. I am anxious to stop now. I have been filling up my I Pod with novels to read, and am preparing all kinds of activities for my new life. I now have 14 school days to go. My first request to my Principal was that there be no recognition of my retirement. He is honoring that, and I am so happy. The last thing I personally wanted was to be invited to a series of receptions to say good bye. Therefore, I can work in my garden, and make plans with friends who are already active in other ventures.

Sammy, don't give up on the roses. I have some that I was sure were dead, but they came back. If they are own root, you can cut them back to the root ball and expose that root ball to as much sun as possible, that will spur them to put out new growth. It's actually nice to have all new canes on a rose for a change.

And congrats on the retirement. I'm a few years away, but can't wait!

Congratulations on your retirement. It sounds like you are really, really ready for the next stage of your life and you've set it up to have fun.

Congrats on your well deserved retirement.
While we did not have a polar winter, we did endure an early November brutal freeze. It froze Mermaid to her roots. Well new growth is about a foot tall. It was a good thing actually as I had neglected to prune her and she was messy. Now she has a second chance.
