Maybe you are aware of the horrible flooding that has hit Serbia and the neighboring countries with loss of life and immeasurable property damage in an already quite poor region of Europe. Sad you may say, but what does this have to do with roses? Well Petrovic Roses, a great rose nursery and rosarium, is located in Serbia near Belgrade. It has an impressive collection of antiques and a pretty good collection of modern roses. I hope they have not been affected by the floods. Maybe someone knows anything about their situation? Linked to is their site. Also here's a pdf of an article which has appeared in Rosa Mundi authored my Mr. Petrovic referring to the history of his collection and his nursery. http://media.wix.com/ugd/e6654e_33c1158130413fb62218519271d7a65c.pdf

Nik, I am familiar with Petrovic. I bookmarked the website ages ago because it contains wonderful photos and descriptions of many old roses. I do not know the state of the nursery following the floods but am keeping it, along with the entire region, in my hopeful thoughts all the way from Oregon. Carol

It is truly terrible. There is basically no govt. in Bosnia and Herzegovina - just criminals robbing the citizenry, while the destruction of what is essentially a profoundly pastoral and agricultural economy is horrendous. I fear for Europe - BiH represents both the worst response to crisis - a massive descent into rabid nation\alism....but also the best - citizen's plenums and a deep swell of humanitarian responses to this tragic flooding. Even odder (and scarier) has been the almost perfect media silence about the epic scale of this disaster - BBC silent, newspapers just the merest mentions....although massive media coverage of bloody housing bubbles and real estate booming in 'Red Hot' London. WTF?

I found out from their fb page that they are all right since their region was not hit by the floods. My best wishes to all the people suffering in both countries affected. Further to the loss of life, this is an already poor and problematic region in Europe and this loss of property, infrastructure and production capability can only make matters much worse. Nik
