Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!

| I have a few holes in the garden that can't be filled by roses that I have in the pot ghetto. I instantly thought of Burlington, since 8 of those spots are for mini Chinas. Late last night (east coast time) I sent an email to request the current availability list. The reply, with lists attached, was in my inbox first thing this morning. My morning wake up computer time today has been spent trying hard not to drool on my laptop. What a selection!! In the absence of Vintage, it looks like Burlington is a viable alternative. Figured I'd let everyone know, in case there are folks here who aren't familiar. ************************** I know someone will ask, so here's my tentative list: Cinderella Patty Lou (2) Popcorn Baby Betsy McCall Si Tom Thumb Oakington Ruby This is only from the Miniatures list. Now I'm thick into the regular availability list, wondering if it's wise to consider replacing some of my lost classic HTs right now .... okay, maybe just a few. :) |

Thank you, will check it out. Wondering how much shipping is, but will choose roses first and bother them with questions later... Still ok to plant in this area? Are these own root, budded, both? |
RE: Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!
| | |
| Own root. I plant all year, except for the dead of winter. As long as a rose is growing in a pot, and the soil can be worked, you can find me moving and planting roses. (it's only bare root roses that need to be planted exclusively in the spring in our VA climate.) Order, plant, watch and keep your new plants watered, enjoy! |

| Burling's roses are a wonderful resource and she is a really nice person. Vettin if you tell her what you want to order she calculates the shipping and emails you the price of the order. You can either do pay pal give her your card info or send a check. |
RE: Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!
| | |
| I will check it out. I am thinking of getting into minis (oh no!!!) |
RE: Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!

| I've ordered from her several times and it was always a GREAT experience. I wish she had Mableton Crimson China (aka Mableton Agrippina). That was the rose I tried for at Vintage's first last sale, but didn't get. :-( |

| Burling is wonderful to work with too. The plants i got this spring are thriving! |
RE: Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!

| You'll find her shipping a whole lot more logical than Vintage's was, too. She makes use of the Priority Mail boxes from the USPS, most often taking advantage of the Flat Rate option. I've checked that out frequently when I've shipped materials. For a box I COULD have paid $29 to mail, the Flat Rate option let it send for $17.45! I keep a supply of regular and Flat Rate boxes on hand (they're free) and if there is a question, I'll take the regular with the materials all packed but unsealed, then check the weight on the self service machine. Whichever is the most cost effective, that's what I use. The Post Office generally has the Flat Rate boxes right there, but often not the non Flat Rate. Anyway, Burling usually uses the Flat Rate so she knows what the costs will be for the average purchases. You'll find it a lot easier to swallow than the "based on weight" method. Kim |
RE: Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!
| | |
| I'll second what Kim said about shipping. I'm in Louisiana, and Vintage's shipping rates were astronomical for me. Burling's are much more reasonable. (Thanks for explaining that, Kim. I hadn't understood how she could ship from the same state for so much less.) |
RE: Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!

| We've known Burling for the longest time, and she is one of the world's nicest people. Her list is terrific. I think that, eventually, I will need to order 'Xiang Fen Lian'. But, also note: She has "Grandmother's Hat." |
RE: Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!

I too have ordered many roses from Burling. Her prices are very competitive, and I often can find roses that are unavailable elsewhere. She stocks bands and larger plants too. Everything I have ordered from her has arrived packaged appropriately and the roses have been healthy. She is definitely at the top of my list for rose suppliers. Lynn |

| Burlington roses is a top of the line nursery. You will not go wrong by ordering from her. .My only complaint is I wish she lived in a colder zone. Because I would only order from her. I wish she could grow more roses for my zone. |
RE: Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!

| I thank this forum for introducing me to Burlington. I have a list of gift roses (and maybe one for me) that I plan to order over time. Burlington sounds like a wonderful resource owned and run by a delightful grower and lover of OGRs! Carol |
RE: Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!

| Well I ordered my roses. I'm very excited. I think I can plant the three full size bands directly in the ground. The minis I plan on keeping in pots for awhile. |

I love Burlington too, I just purchased 6 rose bands from them for the first time. I got (2) Louise Odiers, Climbing Caroline Testout, Excellenz Von Schubert, Weeping China Doll and Cl Pinkie, and another order @ the end of Jun. Is there a big difference between Weeping China Doll and Cl China Doll? |
RE: Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!
| | |
| Yes, Steve, there is a big difference between Weeping and Climbing China Doll. The original, traditional bush form is a dwarf, bushy, ever-flowering bush. The climber is a climbing mutation of that bush. "Weeping" China Doll is a floppy, droopy mutation which benefits from being budded on a standard where it can "weep", droop, from its higher "crown" (bud union). Planted in the ground and not budded, it would grow more like a shorter, floppier bush making a mound, much of it laying on the ground like a ground cover. Where the bush holds its flowers upright in clusters, the weeper's flowers are carried on elongated, drooping stems. It's what makes it worthy of budding on a standard, where those draping wands of flowers can be enjoyed up in the air, instead of in the dirt. Kim |

| This reminds me that several months ago I called Burling to request a rose list, mostly because of positive comments I've read for this forum. She mailed it out immediately. She was so nice to talk to. I think I misplaced that list, I'm going to start looking for it. I'm anxious to learn more about this great sounding company. |

| My mom and I made a joint order from Burling recently. Everything arrived in great condition, shipping is by far the most reasonable I've encountered, and she does have a great inventory. I'll be ordering from Burling again this Fall. The first order was: Buff Beauty Excellenz von Schubert Jeri Jennings Pride of Oakland Sophie's Perpetual Buttercup Lady Hillingdon Penelope, Jacques Cartier, and budded plants of Sunshine and possibly Francis Dubreuil for future delivery will likely be the Fall order. The more I look up Sunshine, the more I like it. Jay |

| Just got an email from Burling, saying that my roses will ship tomorrow!!! Feels like Christmas! |
RE: Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!
| | |
| Yeah! Burly got my check yesterday and my roses are also being shipped today! I'm excited. My first minis and some roses I really want and need to replace ones that died this winter. |
RE: Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!

| Like buford said above, Burling received my check on Monday. My roses were shipped on Tuesday. Thursday, eight beautiful rose bands arrived in a VERY well packaged box. All of the roses are well developed enough to plant straight into the garden, which I did with seven of them on Friday. The eighth rose, 'Carolyn Dean', is one that I have been wanting FOREVER and no one appeared to have ever put it into commerce (It is thought to be a sister seedling to 'Renae' and 'Dancing Doll', IIRC.) I ordered this because she had it (Yippee!!!), though I don't have a place in the garden for it yet. Into a pot she will go, to join the other roses that are living life in the pot ghetto ... for now. I will not hesitate to order from Burlington Roses again ... in fact, I plan to do just that later in the year. The roses I received were nearly perfect, the service was above and beyond, and shipping from California to Virginia was very reasonable. Looks like I have found myself another Go-To nursery to feed my rose habit. :) |

| I received mine on Friday. All look great. Twilight Zone doesn't have any leaves, but lots of leaf buds.
I've already planted Paul Ecke Jr and Playboy in the ground Jean Keannely came with a bloom on it!

RE: Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!

| I'm glad you bought Carolyn Dean, Connie. She's a beautiful climber and has created some very lovely, interesting offspring. She's as shade tolerant as Renae and has been, in my experience, as healthy and continuous flowering. You'll love her! Kim |
RE: Amazed by Burlington's Rose List!

| New addiction? Not hardly. You're late to the party, Susan ... I've had a collection of micro-minis since 2008. They were a really big hit during my open garden yesterday. Folks can't believe that something with such small leaves and flowers can (a) bloom so much and (b) actually be roses. Kim, I am thrilled to have Carolyn Dean. Renae isn't as good here as it is in other parts of the country, but Dancing Doll is superb. I was hoping that one day I could add the third sister to the family ... mission accomplished! |
