Treasure Trail FFO...Oolala

My first flower opened on Treasure Trail yesterday, what a beauty. Paul, I love this rose! To be honest, I was afraid that your photography skills were what made this rose appeal to me on the website. But this rose is even more beautiful "in the flesh"! Marianne and Umbra are in their second year in my garden and are doing splendidly, but have not yet opened any of their many buds. Rook, like Treasure Trail, is a new band this year but has not bloomed.

Keep up the good work, Paul.

Kathy

Oh you lucky duck!

I saw this on RVR's website a few weeks ago.
After I picked my jaw up from off of the floor, I saw that it was out of stock...

This one is going on my short list for next year :)

Wonderful to hear, Kathy! My TT is currently in route and should land here later this week. I can hardly wait to see it after your description. :-)

Kathy,

I'm eager to see how the Paul Barden roses do for you. I just noticed today that my Golden Buddha doesn't look like it is going to make it. ugh.

Robert,

Picking up on your comment about Golden Buddha...I received a VERY tiny band of it from RVR last year (I'm rather disapointed in the bands I've received from them as compared to Vintage.)

Mine looks like it's going to die as well. Never really put on any growth.

Kathy, I'm sure we all would love a picture. I love Paul's roses.

Photo below taken three days ago. The container is about 18" wide and deep, to give you an idea of scale. This is why I selected 'Golden Buddha' for commerce. Undoubtedly it does not like every climate, but then few roses thrive everywhere. Sorry it didn't do well in Diane and Robert's gardens. :-(

Paul,

It's a beautiful rose and I'm sorry it doesn't like my foggy coastal garden. But then there are MANY roses that don't so I just keep on trying them.

My Golden Buddha had a bad year, too--major cane dieback, and I thought I was going to lose it. But it's starting to put out new growth, and there may even be a bud or 2 starting to form.

Paul,

I've not given up on GB yet. I'm hoping that it will come back from the roots. I found that Oshun had a slow start last year, but this year it is looking much better...it even has buds!

Golden Buddha seems to love NJ. Have 3 of them in the garden and they're all bloomin fools.

I'd love to hear updates on Golden Buddha and Treasure Trail. How are the plants maturing over the years? I just recommended GB to someone down here, and am hoping I made the right call.

I have a feeling that Paul Barden's Bracteata and Wichuraiana hybrids (including many that may have been culled) may prove (or would have proved) vastly better in our heat and stronger sun, than along the Pacific Coast.

How does one volunteer to test seedlings, anyway? I'd certainly not mind paying for the plants... And what does it cost to NAME a rose? Is there some standard cost/fee/registration structure in place? Or is it a matter of Supply & Demand/Negotiation?

Golden Buddha looks stunning.

It's a shame, but so many of the beautiful roses I come across on this site are not available in Australia :-(

Trish.

I can attest to 'Golden Buddha' liking NJ. Mine came as a band from Rogue Valley Roses back in April 2013, and was planted a few months later. It put out a lot of bushy growth but stayed short, and bloomed in huge flushes. The flowers started at a bit too near the orange shade than I expected, but faded a little by the next day or two to a more attractive (to me) softer apricot. It was one of the few which seemed immune to blackspot here (no spraying other that two doses of a modified Cornell mixture, using Neem oil in place of horticultural oil, and even that was only very early in the season), which says a lot for where I'm located. I'm VERY happy with this rose! My iPhone pictures don't do it justice.

As it arrived, after being planted in a 2-gal container:

First flower a few weeks later:
'Golden Buddha' is a modern Hybrid Bracteata bred by Paul Barden. This flower is showing a very pointed form, though it's usually more rounded. It smells like apricots. photo 970547_10151446960592285_884405962_n.jpg

The pot on the right:

Blooming again late Summer after being planted, and notice how clean the foliage is:

Blooming again in Autumn, after I put the mulch down -- it's the one with the "yellow blobs" of flowers, second rose from the left, way in the back of the pic:

Same day as above, again, look for the "yellow blobs" of flowers, this time to the right of center, front row:
