Some years ago, this rose was highly recommended forum & I'm sort of wondering why, it got a bunch of hyped up, wonderful comments about it. So I thought, gee it must be a grand rose to have. Boy, was it ever a let down! It has barely grown since. The flowers are tiny & I'm not sure if I can barely detect any fragrance, that I remotely expected, either! If you have, or ever had one, do you really think this one, is a real winner, or more that of a dud? Just your honest opinion on Souvenir. Is it actually more like, "Souvenir of Mal Recommendation"?

I believe it is a bourbon, which is not a type of rose I can grow well here. How old is yours? Perhaps it just does not like your climate. Jackie

Yes, it is absolutely one of the greatest roses. Flowers should be around 4" across with elegant fragrance and perfect cupped-and-quartered form. It is well adapted to VA zone 8. The drawback in the East and PNW is botrytis petal blight (balling) following a cool rain. On the West Coast it is also susceptible to powdery mildew. A couple of its sports, 'Kronprinzessin Viktoria' and 'Mystic Beauty' are more resistant to botrytis. 'Mystic Beauty' is otherwise just like 'Malmaison'. All these roses will lose canes after exposure to temperatures around zero. They enjoy warm summers, but mine bloom well in autumn, too. There is something wrong with your site or your plant.

It either loves you or it hates you, there is no middle ground. If your climate/conditions are not to its liking, it will taunt you with the promise of all things glorious, and then spit in your face, laughing. But if it appreciates your growing conditions, it can be spectacular indeed.

| My Mystic Beauty substitute for Souvenir de la Malmaison is one of my best bloomers usually, but I must admit that our recent brutal winter did a number on the poor thing. Had to cut it nearly to the ground--which it did not like. It is growing again, but not very vigorously, and putting out 3 buds right now (had several earlier also). At the moment, it is more like a mini rose in size, although the blooms are still fairly large. Here is MB last year--after a mild winter.

I also have a feeling that it has to like your conditions. In my hot, dry garden it's been stellar, probably my best rose. It's always in bloom and the flowers are beautiful, the plant is bushy and there is little disease. It never loses its leaves and the flowers almost never ball. I don't do anything extraordinary and my soil is very average so I suspect I have the climate it likes. It blooms literally all year. Of all my bourbons it's by far the best. Ingrid

I planted SDLM for the first time this year and it is already my favorite rose! I love the soft pink blooms that are big in size and the smell is wonderful. I am in zone 8 and it is thriving. I would have to say yes it is all that plus some. I am excited for it to grow and be enjoyed for years to come.

I don't grow the original, but all my sports of 'Malmaison' lost all their canes in the recent subzero winter. One I didn't take all the way back, but it grew out weakly, so had I to reprune.

It's an amazing rose here in central Florida, seems to be constantly in bloom here. No problems with balling or botrytis, but our summer rains haven't set in yet. Last summer I noticed that even though it rained day after day, as long as the sun was out it was fine. Several days of gloomy rainy weather in a row are a problem for many of my roses, not just SDLM.
