I had posted earlier of my great disappointment. Having to cut down many of my large shrubs.( horrible winter) Its been 3-4 wks now and the growth coming from the bottom of these shrubs is nothing short of amazing..Some are pushing up canes out of the ground. At 1st I thought oh oh suckers, but no there the same leaves. Very happy.......

So happy for you, Mark. It sounds as though you may have a "summer flush" instead of a spring flush. Who knows, maybe the forced pruning was just what the doctor ordered for your mature roses. I've read over and over again about the amazing results when large roses and climbers had to be pruned way down for whatever reason.

I've had the same experience. And should have been harsher on my pruning of ones I left half done.

This winter certainly rejuvenated my garden. It was such a pain having to cut back all the wreckage. My compost heaps are sky high, but I'm glad I lost so little, and those that are gone needed to go anyway. Spring (or summer in your case) flushes are always so beautiful after a bad winter.

My stubble is also pushing up some nice new growth now. Some of them are almost 2 feet tall already! I'm very relieved to see them rebounding so well. I may actually get some blooms this year, lol!

I've noticed too that a couple that were only one cane wonders last season, having lost that cane over winter, are now sending out 2 or 3 new canes! I'm not sure how but they seem to be doing better than ever.

I've also found a couple that I either didn't cut all the dead stuff off or more died back. I'm going to have to do some repruning here and there.

I'm thinking of doing the same seil..Quadra was a experience call for me. Its got buds coming, but after it blooms I think I'm going to cut it down.. I was surprised that Illusion which has been rock solid hardy for 8 yrs. here had died to the ground. Still I'm very happy things are rebounding nicely.
