Your thoughts on ' Marchesa Bocella' ?

I couldn't resist this Marchesas in a bag... & noticed the main primary branch, is almost the size of a climber! Is it? Or, possibly being that is was less than $4, I may have actually something else...

But in any case, if it is what it's supposed to be, what are its growing habits, are they somewhat typical for the
old hybrid perpetual?
Are you happy with yours?
Does it have any idiosyncracy, about it ?

Your thought, suggestions & any advice, are much appreciated.

Of course, bagged roses may not always be what the packaging says they are.

Most of the MB's I've seen were very upright. How tall? Well, 4 ft. or so --- but they'd been pruned religiously.

WE bought a MB from Hortico long ago, that was the strangest thing I've ever seen. The foliage looked right. The blooms looked right. The prickles looked right . . . Only the thing grew very long, lax canes that arched over and snaked along the ground like a ground-cover. It was a nasty ankle-grabber.

One day, when Syl Arena was here, we showed it to him, and he, too, was mystified.

Oh, it is long-gone from here.

Gringo, a great rose in a variety of climates! Frequent rebloom, fragrant flowers, lovely soft color. If pruned to size and shape, around 4 feet, like most other damask perpetuals. Can grow a couple of feet taller if unpruned. When left to its own devices, it sprawls (not ungracefully) across fence corners, tripods, etc. When pruned to do so, it makes a compact and tidy shrub. I recently posted photos of a false (mislabeled) Comte de Chambord which closely resembles Jacques Cartier/Marchesa Boccella. My rose may, in fact, be JC/MB. Identification will be dependent on its future remontancy. Check out the thread for a match to your purchase. Lori Elf attached photos of her JC/MB on this thread, too, and hers is a good example of this wonderful old garden rose. Carol
