Multiflora Climber

This is a shrub/rambler we call 'Climbing Bluebird'. It's a plant my wife and I raised from a seed of the Moore miniature, Mr. Bluebird. Though it was open pollinated, we are convinced the pollen parent was a thornless multiflora nearby in the yard.

We haven't hybridized roses for years, but this is one of two we have retained. I was pleasantly surprised that after two spells of 15 below zero this winter, it shows no damage whatsoever. A bush of Darlow's Enigma beside it was killed to the ground.

I enjoy it every spring, especially it's strong multiflora scent. It's blooming right now, at the same time as wild multifloras in the area.

(Sorry about the quality of the pictures...I used my phone!)

Bob

How's rebloom?

What you saw this winter about its hardiness matches what I saw in my garden. The roses that survived four separate freeze- then thaw-then freeze again cycles were close to multiflora in their parentage. This included the Orleans Rose related polyanthas that have been great this spring.

Multiflora is a great rose and has great offspring.

Ann-

No rebloom on this one. I didn't really expect it, though, from a first-generation multiflora cross. Just happy to have one that's hardy.

I have one that is similar, but a lighter pink with abundant rebloom.

Next spring we should arrange for my pollen to meet your stamens.

Anne and Hoosier, that sounds like a rose match made in heaven! Hoosier, wonderful new cultivar. The blooms are so pretty and the foliage looks so healthy! I used to live in Minnesota, so I totally get the thrill of winter survivors and thrivers. Carol

Well that's fabulous. I don't have to worry about hardiness here, but if I lived in a colder clime I'd be thrilled with every hardy climber.
