2012, put in a dozen little Linda Campbells that came from Rogue Valley already budded and ready to pop. They did great. Spring 2013 - all survived, all blossomed, all went on to put on cane length - some to two feet. Winter 13-14 in NH: brutal cold, and so much heavy snow cover! Spring 2014 - all survived, with minimal dead cane tips - BUT everyone was lying flat on the ground (see snow cover, above). So - I propped them up with those 18" green vinyl stakes with the loop on top that I've used for lilies. Will they get strong enough to stand alone? Or should I have pruned them down really short - 4" - 6 " ?

I wouldn't prune them unless there was physical damage. The canes should get stronger with time, and if those particularly ones don't, they can be pruned off next year. For now the roses should keep as much cane as possible.

This sounds a little strange but I propped up my recumbent White Meidiland with three rat traps (couldn't bear to use them) and a year later the canes hardened so that I could remove them. The wood was already weathered on the traps and the trap part gone so it didn't look as bad as it sounds. Ingrid

Prop don't crop! They'll harden off and get stranger as they mature.

Good to have the unanimous support for what my gut told me to do!
