cicada damage photo 2014-05-12144620_zpsf70d1745.jpg

Last year we hosted the local 17 year cicadas (Brood II, but whose counting?)

While not nearly as bad as the year we had ALL KNOWN CICADAS MAKING AIRPLANE NOISES, there apparently were some aftereffects. While taking flower pictures on the R. primula, I found this specimen of cicada damage. They like woody stems of a certain diameter, and don't seem to care about species. So there is this damage, more on Frontenac, and probably a lot more on Darlow's Enigma. The white, fluffy stuff is really the pith of the cane that has been pulled out.

Ugh! You're right, Mad, always something! I hope your roses will be OK.

Sorry Mad Gallica. It always hurts to see roses get damaged.

Honestly, it is more strange than annoying. By definition, this happens on large, hardy roses that can handle a lot more damage than this. Just everything comes through the winter in decent shape except for this problem. And it will take me years to find and get rid of all of it. The cicadas tend to do this on the bottom side, and it isn't necessarily enough damage to kill the cane.

Something else that apparently can't read the books. They are supposed to prefer oak trees, and manage with other forest tree types. At least this year they left the bay tree alone.

Mad Gallica, I send empathy. I grew up with those little buzzers in TX. I didn't realize that they had adapted all the way to NY...or that they attack roses! With shared tooth grinding--Carol
