I like to use mulch to deter weeds , create a border so that it is easier to mow around the roses and I like the way it looks. I have previously gotten it from a nursery and it was expensive. Home depot is advertising earthgro mulch for pretty cheap - ok to use or does it cause issues? Looks like it may have a dye i ti - will any of it hurt the roses? Thanks

It won't harm existing plants. It can deter the growth of new annual plantings and of course anything you plant by seed, for the same reasons it deters weeds. I use it all the time.

The dyed stuff is cheaper because it is raw wood chips that have not been composted, just dyed. It takes time and energy (gasoline for the equipment to move and turn the material) to compost; it takes less time and energy to just dye raw chips from the lumbermill. That's why it's cheaper.

I think the dyed stuff looks really unnatural, (the colors are awful) but any organic-based mulch is going to do what mulch does.
