Evelyn - Size and growth pattern in my med climate?

I'm confused about this rose. Bought it bareroot in January, still have it in a pot. It's beginning to open up its buds but I'm undecided about where to plan on planting her. It's showing an upright and relatively restricted habit but I know this can change. Any experience?

Nick -- In my coastal Southern California garden, Evelyn grew canes 12-14-ft long. If I'd had a place to stretch them out horizontally (along a low fence, for instance) I think she might have bloomed profusely on lots of laterals.

BUT . . . I didn't have a way to do that, so all of her bloom was at the top end of the canes -- 'way up in the air. The blooms were lovely, and smelled like a tree-ripe fresh peach, BUT there were so few of them! To make matters worse, she mildewed on new growth. :-(

The mildew might not be an issue for you, but I would sure find something like a picket fence for her to grow along.

Jeri,
Thanks for the info. She hasn't showed any long growth for me yet. Also, no PM whatsoever which is 'strange' since any rose which tends tp get mildew seems to get it in my garden especially when young.. She has had very clean foliage up to now. Will keep her in the pot for the time being.

Here, a big fountain, arching outwards, quite a bit wider than tall. Blooms on the tips, so a moderate pruning after each round of flowers may be the ticket to repeat. The most heavenly flowers, but temperamental.

Here she is today, after the nasty heat wave we just had. Most of the flowers fried but there are a few left.

Hoovb, have you noticed if she produces flowering laterals from the canes that tend to be horizontal? I was wondering if she would be suitable for pegging.

Hi Nik!

I've had mine for 3 years now, 2 of them in a pot. She seems upright to me too, also blooms on the tips. I've pruned her pretty hard every year and she stays compact but not an especially pretty bush. Also blooms on the tips. Flowers are gorgeous but fry in the sun for me too. If I had to replace her, I might go for Strawberry Hill again. I have that in front, and it is a surprisingly pretty bush. Very nice glossy healthy foliage so it always looks good.

p.s. Ack! My pic of Strawberry Hill is upside down and I can't fix it. Sorry about that!
