Jacqueline3 how do you root your roses?

Read your other thread where you rooted your mystery rose and peace. What rooting method do you use? Would you describe it if you have the patience pls? I am too late for the hardwood burrito method this year. Will look into those tomato cages...
And does your peace rose have a scent? We had one twenty five years ago with a great fragrance, barely can detect the scent on ones today. Alas the one we had no longer exists.

I am lucky to have a small back porch which is all enclosed, and has large windows on two sides. On one side, there is a large shelf right below the window.

I got a small glass fish tank. I have had a lot of luck lately by taking the cuttings, dipping the ends of them in rooting hormone, and then planting them directly into planting mix in small terra cota pots (6 inches?). I put the pots directly into 2 gallon plastic bags, and seal the bags. Then I put the pots in their bags on the shelf, and cover them with the glass fish tank (turned upside down). My DH puts a shade screen on the window, in case it is too hot or bright, so they do not cook (my cats help by sitting on top of the inverted fish tank - see pic). The fish tank is sitting on a large shallow sheet sort of thing, so if the water comes out of the pots it just sits there until it evaporates.

As the cuttings grow, I eventually take off the plastic bags and let them continue to grow inside of the fish tank. I keep them watered enough so that the inside of the fish tank clouds up. When they are pressing on the top of the tank I take the pots out and put them in the shade for a while. This way, you end up with already potted small plants, and do not have to transplant them into a pot.

I have no idea if this would work in another climate - we are dry, and warm in the summer. I have done this in the winter too - I think the fish tank and the plastic bags protect the cuttings, and although our back porch is not heated or insulated, it never gets very cold because our winters are very mild.

Good Luck!

Jackie

Thank you!! Any particular kind of potting mix and rooting hormone please?

Sorry I am not very careful - all I can tell you is that the rooting hormone was liquid (I seem to be out of it at the moment), and I buy whatever high quality potting mix they are selling at my favorite nursery (not Home Depot, etc).
