Is Liatris in your garden? This wildflower native makes a beautiful backdrop in a rose bed. It adds visual & vertical interest. I went on a Liatris Spicata shopping spree. They return yearly from corms. Love it! Spectacular in floral bouquets

I was pleasantly surprised today. Whole Foods is selling Liatris along with coneflowers, herbs, & succulents. Carol, I think butterflies will be here shortly.

Does Liatris grow well in coastal Southern California? A couple of decades ago, I spent several years trying to grow various species and varieties of Liatris from seed, and couldn't get the seedlings to make it to the second year. I like the look and general spirit of Liatris, and would be happy to spend another couple of years trying to make a go of them . . . IF there's any hope of success . . .

I have liatris growing with my Ascot and behind Alexander Mackenzie (which don't bloom together though.) Liatris is a prairie native and supposedly is drought tolerant. The primary variety can be found inexpensively at garden centers, but the other varieties can be found at Prairie Moon Gardens. A number seem to top out at zone 8, but Scaly Blazing Star was native to Texas and makes it way further south than other varieties, so might be an option for zone 10.
