Question for jacqueline3

Sorry Jackie, I don't know how to send you an email!

I have seen a few lovely pics of your big old climbing Sombrueil planted with a jackmanii clematis on GW, and there's also a dark magenta rose that is planted next to Sombrueil that sometimes sneaks into the frame. I am going to try and post a pic here, but I've never done that before so we'll have to see how I go...

I'm hoping you can tell me what that reddish magenta rose is? I LOVE the colour, and I think this combination is about the prettiest I've ever seen.

Cheers.

I have to agree, absolutely stunning!

That rose is the old HT Cl Criimson Glory, which starts out a true velvety dark red, and then fades towards the purple end of the spectrum, thus the color you like. It is VERY fragrant with the old rose fragrance. I don't spray it.

It is gradually climbing higher up the arch, but I think it will stay a moderate height. It blooms in waves all summer.

One of my most favorite roses - thanks for asking.

Jackie

Thanks Jackie.

It's absolutely wonderful looking, and good to hear it's a great rose for you also. What a winning combination!

That pic is what inspired me to plant the clematis 'H. F. Young' and 'Henryi' to climb into the rose 'Orfeo' I have hugging a tree. Maybe next year I'll get to see that wonderful red, white and lavender-blue combination.

Ahh, great minds, Christopher! I'm sure it will look amazing.

I have a gazebo type thing which I have ordered Lamarque and Cl. Devoniensis to grow over, and I was thinking of planting clematis Rouge Cardinal and a mid blue clematis to go with them, but after Jackie's description of Crimson Glory (fragrant! disease-free! mannerly climber! good repeat!) I think I will have to order it next year instead of Rouge Cardinal. If I have the choice between something fragrant and something not fragrant, the smelly one wins every time.

So the list grows....

And Jackie, I do hope you're flattered and not angry about us borrowing (see: shamelessly stealing) your glorious combo :)

RE: Question for jacqueline3

Of course I don't mind. For years I had no idea which clematis that was, so I just kept ordering purple clematis and planting them at the bottom of various roses - here are some pics.

One thing about Cl Crimson Glory - I did not say it was disease free - I said that I do not spray it, which is true. It does get a little blackspot from time to time, but I just take the leaves off, and it does not ever get it badly, or any rust, which is the bane of some roses on the US West Coast.

Here is a purple clematis with Cl Ice Berg (and some finishing blossoms of Buff Beauty):

Last pic of roses & purple clematis

RE: Question for jacqueline3

Ahhhh, that last pic is glorious too!! I can't wait for my roses to get big enough to handle a clematis or two.

Point taken, Jackie, about disease free vs no spray. I will never spray either, but I've ordered a bunch of bourbons and a few Austin's, so I expect I will see some disease in my garden. So long as it's not too overwhelming, I probably just won't worry about it. If some roses end up looking like the revolting naked HT sticks I see around my neighbourhood, they will meet with Mr Shovel. Plenty more fish in the sea, so to speak.
