I placed it in front the house where she gets 8 hours of sun as instructed on the tag and by the nursery. Apparently this burn the flowers so badly that I cannot even enjoy them. Anybody having this issue?

It looks more like thrips damage to me. Abe will take full sun. He has regular flushes, so see if the next batch of blooms isn't much better for you. Carol

Yes. Very soft petals with lots of scent. 8 hours of sun, particularly with reflected, radiated heat from a window or house wall will fry them quickly. The only time the one I care for at a client's house has decent flowers is when the sun goes lower so the pitch of the house provides greater shade and it receives mainly reflected light from the house next door. This time of the year, even with no reflected/radiated heat from house walls, the flowers do not last more than one day due to heat. They look just like yours, a do it yourself potpourri kit with prickles. If they had more substance, perhaps they would last longer, but they don't and there isn't anything you can to do change that. You'd get more enjoyment from those flowers in less sun. Kim

Abe is beautiful, in other places, but it fries here. I will not grow it again. Lynn

I know that this isn't of any help to someone living in Chicago, if I lived there I would re-plant the rose to somewhere less sunny, but over here we are blessed with a vary long almost 12 month rose blooming season. Many roses fry their blooms in the summer sun but I have accepted this as inevitable as I cannot provide ideal conditions for each and every rose I grow so I continue to enjoy the blooms during our long spring and fall seasons. I practice summer pruning on most repeat bloomers in July-August which means that the roses will not produce flowers to fry during this time anyhow. Alternatively, this is the time to bring buds in the house and enjoy them while they open. I have always been an advocate of lemonade making. Nik |

Any way you can provide Abe with a couple hours of afternoon shade? Many Austins (and other roses) cringe at the afternoon heat but are fine with 6-8 hours of sunlight at other times of the day. Kate

Since it's in a pot, you could move it to a different place that gets afternoon shade. Some of my roses can take full sun all day long. Some can't. I have my AD where it gets afternoon shade and it does fine.

Thanks all. I'm glad I potted this one. I'm going to move her onto the patio area where the house wall will protect her from afternoon sun. Although it is a heavy pot, hope I don't break my back. :-)

Joopster, ignore my thrips suggestion. It sounds like sun is the issue. I've grown Abe in very full sun, even on stucco walls in PDX, with no damage, but zone/geographic location makes such a difference. The fact that your pot is resting on concrete probably enhances the sun exposure and heat. Daphne odora in Portland can react nastily to locations next to concrete. It will take west sun in beds but not adjoining walkways, etc. Abe does grow well in afternoon shade, even in Portland. I've placed him in areas that get only morning sun and his bloom was fine as ever. A very flexible rose in terms of exposure. As you said, how fortuitous that he's potted. Easy to move and experiment. Best wishes for the next batch of bloom! Carol
