So I was stalking the roses of my neighborhood (like you do, right?). I noticed this unusual looking rose in front of a neighbor's house. It has been in continual bloom probably for a month now. It has a noticeable fragrance when I smell it, but I have poor sensitivity to scents, so I cannot evaluate it further. It's hard to see in the photos, but the older growth nearer to the ground is darker green, glossier and thicker. I'm thinking this is probably a Cramosio Superieur China rose, based in part on this description (I am located in NC): "Cramoisi Suprieur or Agrippina, as it is sometimes still called, is one of the old roses that can often be found in country gardens of Texas and the South."

In person, I think the rose is a little more red than the apparently more purple-magenta that my camera shows. Here are two more flower details.

Cramoisi Superieur, OR Louis Philippe, OR any one of a number of other, very similar, red Chinas. You'd be surprised to see how many red China Roses exist (named or un-identified).
