| Or something else? My photo doesn't show it well, but the branches form a perfect fountain. Very few thorns, those it has are tiny and hook shaped. The whole magnificent bush: The base of the plant:

Glauca has colored leaves. It doesn't really look like eglanteria, and a wet eglanteria that size could be smelled around the entire yard. Don't know what it is.

Not glauca - the smallish leaves have a very distinctive look - bronzed, yet glaucous - like grape bloom or sloe berries - small flowers (less than 1inch) with pointed petals. Not all the sweet briars have that apple scented foliage (and yours does look very much like one of the briar roses). There are quite a few US species roses which are unfamiliar to me but Tessiess has an enormous collection including many native species...and may prove considerably more helpful than I am.

How nice to see a picture of you, and what I'm seeing of your garden makes me want to see lots more. Gorgeous! I agree, definitely not R. glauca. Once you've seen it, it's coloring is unmistakable. Whatever yours is, it's very pretty. Oh, how I love the lush greenness of your garden! Ingrid

Oh dear, not me and not my garden! This is my Mom, isn't she as lovely as the roses? I asked her to stand in the photo to give a sense of the shrub"s size. The garden is at a historic home in Ipswich, MA. There is a wonderful old rose garden and the home's caretaker is attempting to identify the collection. She hasn't a clue on this beauty. I just received a little rosa glauca myself this year and the flowers seemed similar. Now that I'm home and looking at mine, I do see what you all mean about the distinctive foliage color.

The heps, when they form, will tell us more. Your little r.glauca will not be little for long.....but a rose I would never be without.
