Update on Brother Cadfael RRD situation

My Brother Cadfael needs to go. It's currently in a container. Should I just put the whole pot with soil & plant in a trash bag & throw it out? Can mites adhere to the plastic pot?

I'm tired of worrying about this plant. I want it gone.

If there are mites on it, the best treatment is to bag it from above, and then seal the bag and THEN dig it out.

You don't want to knock potential disease vectors off into your garden. At this time of the year, that's a possibility.

Ann, if someone were to be removing an infected rose that might have mites on it, don't you think it would be a good idea to spray it with something sticky to glue the mites on? I'm thinking maybe a thorough dowsing with hairspray (which is actually shellac).

I doubt the pot itself would transmit the disease. I would think if you disinfected the pot it would be reusable. I would probably throw the soil away though. As far as I know the soil won't transmit it either but I'd want to be sure there weren't more mites around so I'd toss it.

High holding hair spray is what I recommend esp when removing a single cane if it's the time/s of year when the mite populations surge.

For my garden I have a good binoc microscope and I do check for active populations of 'bugs' in a loose sense on the newer growing tips.

If the rose were close to multiflora in pedigree I'd be even more cautious as the mites really reproduce prolifically on growing tips of R. multiflora.
