Tell me about Austin's The Wedgwood Rose

I'd love to hear from anyone, anywhere, who grows this rose.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jerome,

I planted it one year ago, and it has grown well its first year. It repeat bloomed well last year.

It appears to be vigorous, and produces many buds. The foliage and growth habit remind me somewhat of a Noisette.

The blooms are really lovely, and I think it will bloom abundantly as it matures. The fragrance, to my nose, is not very appealing. It's moderate in intensity, kind of a musky blend.

The bees really like this rose:

I love her so far! I got her last year. Mine is paler than Krista's, except for the very center. The outside of the blooms are practically white for me. Her buds start out pointed, but the flower eventually cups (if I'm using my terms right). The best of fragrance where I am!

She's been good on disease and is vigorous enough. Her blooms and thin canes are very floppy, though. I had to move her to where I'm letting her climb right by an entry, so folks can smell her and see her close-up.

Her canes so far remind me more of a rose like Renae or Weeping China Doll than an Austin. Very pliable, though :)

Oh, I should have added that I love the musk rose scent :) Keep that in mind when I categorize it as the best of fragrance. Wedgwood smells sweet and musky to me.

Made a 4' tripod for mine. This way I keep the blooms from looking at the ground. Heavy bloomer for me. Usually I'm not to wild about roses with this growth habit but for some reason I really like this rose. I keep it cut for a shrub instead of a climber.

I'm hoping that one of you will answer my questions as this is an old thread. I love the looks of this rose but not sure if I should order it.
1. How thorny is this rose ?
2. Does it fade to white in hot weather ?
Thanks

rosepat--are you still there? I checked Wedgwood's thorniness last night--does have slim, sharp thorns but not heavily thorned. Actually, about average for an Austin.

My new one hasn't bloomed enough for me to make any definitive statements, but so far, yes it fades to a pastel pink/white in hot weather. But so do almost all my lighter colored roses, Austins or not.

Hope that helps.

Kate

Thank you Kate, still working on my DAR bare root order so this is very helpful. I never buy white roses but I have a lot of them in my garden if that tells you anything, I am a sucker for those pale pinks that always fade to white, you think I would have learned by now but I keep hoping the next one will be different. Thanks again.
