ARE closing their San Antonio location

They'll still have their other location and mail-order, but the display gardens in San Antonio are truly striking--it's a rose garden like no other and it's horrible that it's closing.

Has anyone ever visited and do they have pictures?
I'm hugely pregnant, so I can't drive for 3 hours to say goodbye :(

I'm sorry to hear that. I'd hoped one day to see it.

Those of us in the San Antonio area are very sad about their closing. Not only was it great to be able to see the roses growing in their gardens, but they offered a great variety of companion plants, some I've never seen in other nurseries. Also the staff was very friendly and extremely helpful.

Fortunately there are quite a number pictures of the display gardens. Shirley of Rock-Oak-Deer, has done three blogs on it. I've put on pictures on the Texas Gallery, maybe here too, I don't remember. I'll check.

RE: More photos of ARE San Antonio ...

For anyone that wants to see more photos of ARE in San Antonio here are a couple of posts from the Texas Gallery.

This one has mostly companion plants.

On the post linked below there was some question about a photo being that of La Vesuve. I checked next time I was there and they said it was. That's just the way it looked after recovering from a long hot summer.

I'm going to put some other photos I have of ARE San Antonio on the Antique Rose Gallery.

That is too bad. I'm glad to hear they will continue to be in business in a smaller way.

Does anyone know what will happen to the garden itself?

It looks lovely in the pictures. The one time I visited the original garden near Brenham, the roses looked bad. You could really tell they didn't spray much. The bugs were having a feast. It was fairly discouraging.

I'm more worried about the original nursery....does anyone know what this means for Brenham???

RE: ARE closing their San Antonio location

According to the announcement the ARE nursery and gardens in Brenham will remain open and so will the mail order business.

rinaldo - They don't spray at all, that is an important part of the appeal for me.

Texas has had some severe droughts the last few years; I think it's improved some but it's still dry there. Maybe that has a lot to do with how the roses looked and the bug levels...?

I never made it to any of the ARE locations but have grown a number of their roses. I wish them well. Mike Shoup had a lot to do with my learning to love old roses.

Thanks for posting those pictures on the antique rose gallery; I enjoyed looking. Gean

RE: ARE closing their San Antonio location

You're welcome Gean. Mike had a huge influence on my learning to love roses of all kinds, especially the old ones. I attended several of his talks and sat mesmerized while he told details of his adventures.

We had two record cold winters combined with extreme drought. Of course the gardens were not at their best and we didn't shop for the garden much then either. The economy in this area is not too bad, but not good enough to continue the second location.

I have heard that July 15 will be the last day for those of you in the area who would like to make a visit.
