Rushes of blood to the head - Gruss an Teplitz

So in the past week I've picked up a few new roses for the garden. I have added to my collection a 'Pretty Jessica' which has gone into a big pot as well as a 'Strawberry Hill' to replace the one I had to dig out as well as an 'Octavus Weld' which I hope will form a nice screen along my fence.
I also made two impulse purchases, a sad little Prospero which I got for half-off, but which should come good with a little TLC and a big tub and a Gruss an Teplitz. What a lovely rose! Jut hope it performs well in the garden.

I very much doubt that rose in the photo is 'Gruss an Teplitz'; it has far too many petals and the bloom form is much more like a modern HT than 'Gruss an Teplitz', which is a very informal, open bloom of no more than 20 petals. I think you have a mislabeled rose there.

I agree with Trospero, the odds that you have a real Gruss an Teplitz is exceedingly close to zero. If it grows good and smells fine who cares what it really is however.

Hrm. I wonder who she really is.

 o
RE: Rushes of blood to the head - Gruss an Teplitz

Could she be Chateau de clos Vougeot?
I'm sure the color would be lighter in warmer weather.

Or even a hybrid perpetual (too many to list but yours does resemble Ulrich Brunner Fils).

'Chateau de Clos Vougeot' doesn't look like that, either. It's hard to tell what it is from just the pics of the flowers, but it's easy to tell what it definitely isn't.

It looks like 'Mr. Lincoln' to me, honestly.

 o
RE: Rushes of blood to the head - Gruss an Teplitz

I have no idea, but will throw out 'Guinée' as a possibility, simply because it might have once been nearby 'Gruss an Teplitz' if bins were kept in alphabetical order.

 o
RE: Rushes of blood to the head - Gruss an Teplitz

'Guinee' is also a far looser bloom, with no more than 20 petals at most, so I very much doubt that is a candidate for the "Faux Teplitz" we have here.

My Oklahoma looks very much like this rose.

 o
RE: Rushes of blood to the head - Gruss an Teplitz

Looks like Oklahoma or Mr Lincoln they both have the same parentage Charles Mallerin (that beautiful dark red velvet) & Chrysler Imperial. It could even be Charles Mallerin!

 o
RE: Rushes of blood to the head - Gruss an Teplitz

This is 'Guinee', a loose bloom of 15 to 22 petals, open cup in form, somewhat ruffled appearance and never displays a "high centered" look:

 o
RE: Rushes of blood to the head - Gruss an Teplitz

No, they are definitely not the same roses, though each is quite delightful. As is Charles Mallerin, for that matter.

Does 'Guinée' tend to purple with age? That would be a beautiful effect to see various wine-y dark shades on the same plant...

RE: Rushes of blood to the head - Gruss an Teplitz

Chiming in for Lincoln or siblings. To my eye, yours looks a bit more like Lincoln--deeper, slightly purplish--in my opinion. Your rose seems like it's too red for Black Bacarra and more blue than Deep Secret. (Two other contemporary HTs that may be floating around in the general fare.) Climate makes a difference, of course. Mr. Lincoln is a wonderful vintage hybrid tea, so it is a score even if you were expecting something completely different. He is as deliciously scented as my old damasks. Really! Does your rose have that rich old rose scent? In Portland, Lincoln is fairly disease resistant, too, once established. Lots of rebloom. Good cut flower. Three blooms can scent a whole room. Carol

Thanks Carol. Yes, the scent is rich and strong. In fact, that’s what made me buy it.

At the nursery there were 4 identical plants in the “bay”. I had not seen them there previously, so they must have been moved recently. One of the other plants had fully “blown” flowers which did not look like Mr Lincoln and the stamens were visible. It looked like a beefier Francis Dubreuil/Barcelona, which is what I thought it was at first sight. They browned and purpled with age and the petals dint quill (is that the right term? I like roses but I’m no rosarian). But looking at HMF, Mr Lincoln seems to be a bit of a chameleon. The owner was convinced that they were GaT, and he even read me some info about its parentage.

If I was feeling like Veronica Mars, I could ask the nursery where they obtained the budwood from. But I think I’ll just stick it in the garden and see what it turns out to be. A rose by any other name I guess.

If you think it isn't 'Mr Lincoln', I'll just mention that 'Mirandy' isn't close by 'GaT' in the alphabet, but she does have similar silvery sepals (say that 10 times fast!)...

Camps, I don't believe it's Ulrich Brunner fils. At least not like the one in my garden. Wrong color and does look more like a Hybrid Tea.

Just for a quick and superficial comparison, here's a photo I took a couple of years ago of my Mr. Lincoln bloom. The white HT is a mystery rescue rose. If anyone can suggest a possible identity, please feel free. I haven't a clue. Both Lincoln and the white HT are very fragrant. The room was filled with perfume from these two. My Lincoln has finished its first flush, so I can't post a current, detailed photo at this time. Carol

Close-up photo.

After I finally persuaded the image to attach, I realized Mr. Lincoln is rather tiny.

Here is a pic taken this morning (first bloom of the season).
It looks a lot more like pics of GAT and less like Mr. Lincoln.
What do the rosarians think?

RE: Rushes of blood to the head - Gruss an Teplitz

Wow, looks like a totally different rose!!! Is it still super fragrant?

I have no idea as to identity, sorry.

RE: Rushes of blood to the head - Gruss an Teplitz

Considering that this thread seems to have no photos of the "real" 'Gruss an Teplitz', here is a link to some.
