The Summer Garden

The spring flush is over, grasshopers and other baddies are eating holes in the leaves, bunnies are eating the flowers they can reach and the garden is not at its best - and yet, I still enjoy it very much. The crape myrtle we planted in place of the giant ficus that was threatening to uproot the house foundation is blooming for the first time, after worrying us by not growing or putting out new leaves for months on end. An early hybrid tea, Souvenir de President Carnot (from Vintage) is proving to be a winner with its thick petals that stand up to the heat. For an early hybrid tea band it's going very well and I love this rose. SdlM has never stopped blooming and Mme. Cornelissen is very lovely. I feel fortunate compared to the poor people who are enduring major drought and can't spare the water for the roses. This may be on the horizon for me also, but for now I'll enjoy what I have, and would like to share it with you.

Souv de la Malmaison really is a wonderul rose, such a happy bloomer in the warm summer weather.

Love the big pink blooms on Belinda's Dream.

Souv de President Carnot is really interesting to see, I just love the old Hybrid Teas.

Lookin good, Ingrid, much better than mine. In addition to the heat, we've had some very heavy rains that clobbered everything. It was much needed rain, though.

Lovely! Nice to have another opportunity to see SDLM :)

What strikes me about your garden is how open it is to the surrounding environment and how it fits into it with a kind of mutual flow.

Ingrid I always love to see your garden, its so beautiful :) My SdlM just completely opened up for me today my first bloom on this one, yea I am doing a very excited little kid happy dance hehe

Ingrid, I always enjoy photos of your garden, as well as the surrounding terrain. It appears that you have primarily roses, iris, daylilies and other perennials, or do you also have a good amount of annuals in your beautiful garden?

Thank you all so much for your very kind comments. It's my pleasure to share the garden with you. I know how much enjoyment I derive from seeing others' gardens.

Molly, I'm afraid I don't have any annuals. My climate is very harsh in terms of heat and my "soil" is decomposed granite which I've tried to enrich, with varied success. I've had to discard quite a few perennials too and only the easiest ones remain. Cute little flowers barely last a year if I'm lucky before they give up and die ungracefully.
