Strawberry Hill or Heritage?

I've been watching Strawberry Hill in a client's garden -- what a beautiful rose! The color and the form are stunning, and it's blooming away in our hot, hot summer. The pictures of Heritage are also soooo beautiful, but I've never seen the rose.

Which would you choose?

RE: Strawberry Hill or Heritage?

I don't have strawberry hill so I can't comment on it but I did plant Heritage the beginning of June. I got it from a local nursery where it had been kept in the shade and snacked on by the deer. Needless to say it wasn't pretty lol. Since I have planted it, it has put on new growth and has bloomed several times the last few weeks. The flowers are a pretty soft pink but not as large as I thought they would be but that could be because it's a young plant. I have been impressed with its growth and the blooms have a good fragrance. I'm not very good at describing smells but I think it smells pretty. I live in Se Tx and so far it has tolerated the heat well and is in full sun about 7 hours during the day. I am pleased with Heritage and would definetely plant another one.

Thanks for the feedback, Boncrow. Between Heritage and Evelyn, which are you liking best, and how would you compare them?

RE: Strawberry Hill or Heritage?

I like them both! I planted Evelyn this past March and Hertage a few months later in June. Both seem to have more of a spreading growth which I like Evelyn has octopus arms and heritage so far has no octupus arms. After a bloom fades in Evelyn at the end of the octuples arms I have been cutting it back even with the busyh and this has helped. Evelyn has had blooms almost continuously and heritage seems to be following suit. Both are handling the heat very well in my humid Se tx weather. Evelyn has had a touch of BS but not bad and it cleared up, so far heritage has had no BS. Evelyn is a beautiful apricot peachy color with I guessing a medium size bloom and heritage is a soft pink bloom with smaller blooms. I'm not good at describing smells but to my nose Heritage smells strong all day for me, it's a pretty almost spicy smell but I am sad to say that I am having a hard time smelling Evelyn :(. She is supposed to have a peach smell which I have only smelled faintly and mainly in the mornings, my mom can smell it better than I can and loves it. I hope this helps, I kinda rambled on so I hope it all made sense. I would actually plant both again.

I have both and Heritage blooms more but needs more water. Heritage likes to climb but is less thorny. Heritage takes more shade but Evelyn's flowers last longer. Both have nice scent. Sometimes Heritage can smell lemony rose and Evelyn is more fruity rose. They both need morning sun to be their best color and scent. If it's just the look of the flowers you like about Heritage then maybe consider Sceper'd Isle. S I is easier, blooms more and does it with less water an in less space. No lemony rose fragrance though.

So far my Heritage hasn't shown me she wants to climb but she has only been in the ground a month and I forgot to mention her color does fade in the heat and Evelyn's color stays pretty even in the heat.

jannike, just keep in mind that a rose that does well in humid heat may be a disaster in our dry heat. If you've seen Strawberry Hill doing well in your area that may be a good indicator for you to choose it, unless someone has a plant of Heritage in your area that is also doing well. As in real estate, with roses it's all about location.

Evelyn is about 8 years old and Heritage about 16.

Evelyn is a yellow-based pink which creates beautiful peachy-pink blends with a lovely fragrance, an old-fashioned buttoned eye bloom and a more relaxed growth habit. It fits beautifully into a cottage garden style. Yes to an octopus cane appearing out of the blue.

Heritage's pink doesn't have a yellow base so consistently light clean pink. It's blooms are disciplined, never muddled nor buttoned. Sometimes the centers have petals not growing in the perfect symmetrical chalice form she usually has. Growth is upright with strong canes. It looks well in a formal scheme. Mine will grow above 6 feet. Blooms last 1 day in a bouquet.

2 very different roses, IMO. I think of Heritage as being a formal stately rose and Evelyn as a relaxed country cousin. Both get some blackspot here. Evelyn gets the ahhs from me.

Strawberry Hill. Strawberry Hill. Strawberry Hill.
She's a stunner.

Yes what Iris said lol. It is I'm glad to hear how both plants look as they get older , mine are still babies but so far I like them both.
Adam your strawberry hill is sooo pretty.
Jannike I think I would choose strawberry hill since you know it does well in your climate but I would also get Evelyn, she is worth it so far for me. Can't wait to hear what you decide!

The blossoms of 'Heritage' shattered in two days, in 80+ degree F. weather, after opening in our garden, in Oakland California. A pretty rose, but if you want a bloom that is similar to it, I'd suggest 'Duchess de Brabant' which is also deeply cupped to globular, and a light pink and does far better in hot summers, here. Plus it is a water wise to drought tolerant plant and it has a longer bloom season, and faster re-bloom, compared to the Austins. I'd choose it over Heritage.

Lux.

Boncrow and everyone above -- will post back soon.

Adam -- your photo stopped me in my tracks -- gorgeous Strawberry Hill, just like my client's! But I thought you didn't like SH and sp'd her -- what happened?

Jannike- That is a photo from before I cut here out.
She was just in a bad spot at the front of the bed and I couldn't transplant her at the time. She was sending canes over the path and was creating a general nuisance of herself. I have since played some 'musical plants' and bought another SH for a better spot. Shes's planted adjacent to my devoniensis, which will screen her vicious stems. Shuld be a good flower combo too.
