The Dark Lady Has Amazed Me!

Some of you may remember that I discarded The Dark Lady because, instead of being dark, was a bright red, and I hate bright red roses! Reddish roses that veer more toward the purple side are just fine with me, though. At any rate, The Dark Lady went bye-bye, or so I thought. Something of the root must have been left since a little shoot came up after some time, which grew stronger and then put out some buds. I didn't have the heart to yank out the little shoot, and imagine my surprise when the first flower opened and it wasn't bright red. My camera doesn't really capture the true color, since the rose is more violet than pictured. It is really lovely, and I just can't understand how it could change color like that. I did fertilize it with rabbit droppings this time, but could that have made a difference? At any rate, I am a happy camper.

That's more the color range I see here.

Love the bloom. The plant, not so much.

muscovy, it is a fragrant rose but not today for some reason. However, it is definitely a "smelly" rose.

jeri, since it's a superb rose for me in terms of growth, health and rebloom, I'm not surprised that it doesn't perform as well for you, since your climate is so different. I call it the SdlM syndrome: that rose was a dog in your garden and in mine is the best performer and most beautiful rose overall. Other roses are wonderful for you and eke out a miserable existence here until the finally give up altogether.

Thank you all so much! I wish I had taken a picture when it was red but I was too mad at it to bother. It would have been great to be able to compare the colors now. Rats!

I'm definitely enjoying - I'm thrilled. It seems like such a healthy rose, even in this heat.
