Centifolia Paul Ricault

Hi,

I planted a Paul Ricault centifolia rose, on its own roots. It's rated as shade tolerant, mine got 4-1/2 to 5 hours sunlight a day. It produced roses prolificly, and of course they are gorgeous. But problems quickly began. It's canes were too weak for the flower load and bent over severely, lower ones on the ground. Should have provided support. As it got older, every year the foliage was concentrated more and more at the top, til the plant was half or two-thirds denuded, with huge spikes for thorns. No amount of pruning would persuade the thorny thing to grow new shoots from the bottom. I finally dug it up and gave it to a friend who had a lot of open space in full sun. Then to add insult to injury, the roots produced no less than 8 new Paul Ricaults bewitching, lovely little things that coyly conceal the problems that will occur later. I see photos on the web of beautiful Paul Ricaults. What am I doing wrong?

RE: Centifolia Paul Ricault

Over my years and years of growing roses I've concluded that some roses just like a particular spot/climate while others do not. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it. I have The Fairy growing up to 8 feet tall in full blazing sun and crappy soil, while Love sits in enviably rich loom and less harsh sun and it hasn't grown a bit in 20 years. New Dawn, William Baffin, & Tess of the D'Urbervilles are monsters, but Zephrin Drouhin just pokes along, Paradise, and Kiss Me take off each spring like wildfire, but they're half dead by fall.

I've given up trying. My advice to you would be to take those little baby Paul Ricaults and plant them randomly around your yard - stick one under a porch, one in the middle, one by the house, one surrounded by other plants... maybe you'll get lucky!
