One of the two hybrid perpetual at Duke Gardens finally bloomed again this summer, Enfant de France. I'm not a huge fan of the kind of loose, fluffy, narrower petals of many HPs. However, it is easily one of the BEST roses I have ever smelled. To me, the fragrance is extremely strong. It's very citrusy to me, like lemon spice tea, just glorious. It's to bad it's so large amd HP bushes tend toward ugly and gangly, at least down here:

Here's a picture of the bloom. I like the classic pink color, the nicely executed two tone scheme, and the nice size.

Soooo pretty, wish I could smell it thru my screen!

The flower is gorgeous but if that's the best the bush will ever be I would be inclined to pass on it. I wonder if judicious pruning and fertilizing might make for a fuller, more pleasing plant. I've always admired the flowers but your picture makes it look extra lovely. Ingrid

FWIW, Ingrid, in my coastal garden, it mildewed to a truly astonishing degree. I gave it to a friend who loved the blooms, and lived further inland. ALAS! It continued to mildew at heroic levels for her, as well, and it finally left for landfill duty.

This is August, we'll see if the fall flush is any good. Duke gardens I don't think sprays, and most roses there don't show to their best potential.

Thanks for the tip, Jeri, although I never seriously considered growing HP's here, other than Grandmother's Hat, which had wonderful, healthy foliage and flowers that fried in an hour or two. I have to be super picky unless I want to be disappointed and throw my money away. Ingrid

As to that, Ingrid, I think we make a mistake if we regard "Grandmother's Hat" as typical of the Hybrid Perpetual group. It's quite different in most respects from roses such as, oh, General Jacqueminot, or La Reine, or Henri Nevard, or Souv du Docteur Jamain. To be honest, I think "Grandmother's Hat" is more like "Ragged Robin" than it is like a typical HP. Just my personal observation -- YMMV. :-)

Location, location, location! That bush looks TERRIFIC to me! Esp in a no-spray garden. From steamy central Florida....
