I am hoping against hope that Austin will bring Wollerton Old Hall to American gardeners this spring. Anybody know what the new intros will be this year? I emailed Austin in Tyler and have not heard back.

we just got the catalogues for this year and, to my utter astonishment, there are a couple of roses I want. The Lark Ascending is a lovely rose in the style of windflower or Compte de Champagne - a softly peachy semi-double. There is a pinky red which looks the image of Pomponella - the same deeply cupped and incurved form of Jude or, indeed, Wollerton OH. Cannot remember what it is called but something royal because of the bloody jubilee. Another 2 which are just meh and a weird orangey one called Bolanse (or summat like). Last year, I think only WOH stood out - was that the year of Cariad and the Lady's Blush (pretty boring imo) Oh yeah, there was another I sort of fancied last year - The Fighting Temeraire - another slight oddity from DA (single, large flowered, very similar to Kordes Fruhling series, in some ways. A naff white called Susan something or other (Yeah, I know I am getting my years mixed up but I don't have the catalogue to hand. I am sure you will find something to spend your money on, Jerome, without trying too hard. |

I inquired a few months ago about Queen Anne, a beautiful light pink rose, and they told me they would have it in stock for spring 2013. I'd love to buy this rose, so I'll be checking their website regularly in the autumn to look for it...

Fighting Temeraire must be one of the ugliest roses of later years, at least the open flower. If you want to be kind you may call it interesting. It's my belief that David Austin didn't have any other rose in Turner colours in stock when asked to come up with something for the Turner Contemporary Gallery at Margate in Kent. I am sure he will withdraw it when he's had time to breed something better and call it Fighting Temeraire 2015 or whatever.

It will be England's Rose and Queen Anne allegedly. I think I'll pass on these wait for the brand new ones to get here from England and pick up some of the older ones I want.

Englands rose is pretty rubbish - if you can get princess ann, do, it's a really nice rose. I had to put wollerton old hall in an obelisk to get it to stand up, it isn't arching, it isn't even lax, it's riddiculous, lies on the floor. It's a climber really, no business selling it as anything else. They seem so desparate to get a white, that they are introducing some pretty naff ones, so stay away from those too. My recommendations for the later releases are Wollerton old hall with some support, Princess Ann, Royal Jubilee, and Heathcliff. Heathcliff is deep pink up close but very much red from across the garden - it is very sensitive to rain though, doesn't ball, just gets blotches all over the flowers. We have had incredible amounts of rain though so that can be forgiven. I saw tranquility in the gardens this year and it wasn't the nicest thing I have ever seen, covered in brown rotting flowers, again though, the weather has been awful but it looked worse than most.

Thanks for the information. Campanula, I agree the Lark Ascending looks lovely. Princess Ann - I'll look into that. Love the look of Royal Jubilee too. What baffles me is that they used to introduce many varieties each year, and this will be the second year of only 2. I probably wouldn't get any white ones, as we have a ton of white and near white already.

A number of roses were dropped from the Austin website this past winter, it seems as if they are cutting back on the variety that they sell in the US, from the Austin site.... Princess Anne is available now, hopefully Queen Anne will be available in the autumn...

Is that so, Mariannese (FT). I admit, I have not seen it in the flesh but I really liked the look of Morning Mist and am always drawn to singles anyway (a bit sickly, though). Thanks for the heads up. Grief yep, Caldonbeck - what a crappy year - I swear Jude the Obscure had around 5 blooms....all summer, Falstaff even worse, Wild Edric went yellow and looks dead, various others consigned to rose disgrace (around the back of the house wall). Only decent Austin, Crocus Rose (and that was a pressie so I cannot even take credit for the pick).OTOH, a lot of my species roses are just ...soaring. Yep, Royal Jubilee looks kinda nice. I really like doubles to be globe shaped, cup shaped or whatever, with incurved petals....and if they show their stamens, I am in heaven - weird how these little fixations and ideals get lodged in our minds, hey? |

I was browsing Regan Nursery's site, and noticed that they've added Wollerton Old Hall, and some other Austins: Lady's Blush (The Lady's Blush), and Fighting Temeraire.

I just called the DA office in Tyler - the new catalog wont be out until November, and I asked what new roses there would be - Lady Salisbury is one I was not familiar with, but photos look pretty - anyone know anything about it? Also Queen Anne, Ladys Blush, Fighting Temeraire, Wollerton Old Hall, Englands Rose.

That's good it's going to be more than just two this year. I like the look of Wollerton Old Hall, but I already have Jude the Obscure. Temptations are so hard to resist.

Jude is very very different to wollerton. I would have both :-)

Caldonbeck, enable me. Does Wollerton smell different, grow different, or have a different look than Jude?
