Anyone any ideas on the parentage of this one ? Is it recorded anywhere ? Do you think it's extinct ? Any guesses as to possible parents ???

What's the rose on this forum pic please ?

Many Thanks

Cheers

You can look on helpmefindroses by entering the name and see the parentage etc. This rose does not seem to be available at this time.

Its lineage is listed on its HelpMeFind page (link below). Extinction? No gardens or current photos on HMF...hopefully someone who knows will comment. Any book I have that mentions it is as an historic event, not as a current reality.

Here is a link that might be useful: Rayon d'Or on HMF

I would venture to guess its greatest value was in producing roses possessing stronger yellow on plants improved over itself. Of the fifteen, first generation descendents, Feu Joseph Looymans is the only one I have ever seen. Looymans led to Pilar Landecho, which grew at The Huntington Library (as did Looymans) as late as the mid nineties. They may still, I don't know.

Constance was the strong breeder from Rayon d'Or's first generation seedlings and was used to create twenty-some descendents, probably the most important for breeding being Souv. de Claudius Pernet.

If these are/were the better HT-type descendants, I would strongly suggest the early descriptions contained a great deal of "license" and were likely comparing it to Soliel d'Or rather than to the period HT types. The only reason to maintain Soliel d'Or is as a museum piece. It is not a "good garden plant" by any stretch of the imagination and certainly not worth using for further breeding. Kim

Sources are listed on the HMF entry.

I'm pretty sure there was a very old Soleil d'Or at a historic site here.

Against my advice, the site management insisted on moving it, and as I predicted, it died. Idiots.

The plant wasn't much, but the blooms were lovely.

No. Rats. I was thinking of 'Soleil d'Or.'

Thanks very much for the information. Interesting & useful as always. I love the look of a lot of the Pernetianas. I think a bit of '" license" was sometimes used on the perilod illustrations of roses as well.

Derek
