 o
for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

Jeri, or anyone who grows Lady Roberts - I bought a rose that was labeled Lady Robers at the Sacramento Cemetery rose sale this Spring. It has just made 4 blooms. All of them are identical - pale yellow, very full, with a gold sort of center (which fades to pale yellow). Jeri, I know you grow Lady Roberts. I know that baby roses put out blooms that are not typical. I know that my Anna Olivier, of which LR is a sport, sometimes has all yellow or all pale pink blooms.

However, these blooms seem to have a lot more petals than my AO. So, my question is - has anyone who has LR seen blooms on it like these? If it is not LR, does anyone recognize who it is, or like to take a guess? It is obviously a tea rose of some sort.

I wouldn't say that it CAN'T be -- but it DOESN'T look quite right, does it?

I'd like to see what Anita (Cemetery Rose) thinks of it. And I'd like to run it by Barbara Oliva.

Does it have the orange splotch at the base of the petals? Jill Perry has mentioned that LR seems to be both a color sport and a flower sport - having more petals - than AO. On my plant of LR at home I have seen quite a variety of blooms -some semi-double, some very double, but perhaps not quite as double as this.
I think it could still be LR, assuming it has the splotch.

But if it is not, not sure what it is.

Does this plant look like it may climb? Wonder if it could be E Veyrat Hermanos? Not aware of any other yellow teas that may have been propagated.

It could be that this photo back lit is making it look different. It doesn't look like my Lady Roberts, which has a more creamy light apricot look. Somehow the petals don't look quite right either, but I can't say positively.

RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

Here's why it's hard to be sure.

These images were all made on the same Cemetery plant, on the same day. ONE of the buds clearly shows that terra cotta "thumbprint" at the base.

Harder to see as the bloom opens ... AND LOOK AT THE BUD UPPER RIGHT! No terra cotta THERE!

So I guess, right now, the verdict is "beats me."

Mine hasn't bloomed yet. I purchased it at the same place and same time. However Jackie gets at least twice the rainfall at her garden as I get here, and in a good year, even more.

If I ever move somewhere else, it will be to a place that gets more rain, yet still has a mild enough climate to grow the teas I have slowly come to like so much.

(And has lots of lovely old houses with big yards.)

RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

Sounds like Paradise.
I want to move there, too. Will it have pure, clean groundwater?

RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

Lots of northern California fits the description. Parts of Oregon and Washington do, too, except that I have grown accustomed to the sunny skies here. I grew up in the area around Seattle, which is very nearly as cloudy as Seattle.

I actually like New England quite a bit with its green, hilly, and lovely landscapes. My parents came from that part of the world (and some of their ancestors, from maritime Canada), but the winters there prohibit the growing of tender roses I have come to enjoy.

But as you know Jeri, moving means giving up other things that matter to us.

 o
RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

It does, Folly. And we must not discount inertia.

I am far north (in the state) of where I began. But moving further north? Now? Not likely.

The rust-colored blotch is the tell-tale sign. And Janelle is right, the Lady Roberts in the cemetery has more petals than your Anna Olivier, Jackie.

OK, here is another picture. Keep in mind that my bush is a baby - only about 10 inches high and 3 months old. That's why I know I should wait until it starts making mature blooms, but the first 4 being identical, and not looking at all like my AO, made me wonder. I also know that I am supposed to pinch off all of the first blooms, so I did that, and took one apart and took pictures of the others.

Some of the leaves have 7 leaflets, and all of them have those horrible prickles on the back of the leaves. I don't see a rust colored blotch on the base of the petals. I took one open bloom apart and counted the petals and it had 65! My AO only has 25-26.

However, this yellow bloom with the gold in the middle looks annoyingly familiar to me - any guesses, assuming it is NOT LR or AO? Does anyone remember where the roses labeled Lady Roberts at the Spring sale at the Sacramento Cemetery came from?

I am not sad at all to have this rose - I love the way it looks, and it is obviously old. Just was not expecting another mystery to unravel. I will have fun over the next 12 months figuring out if it re-blooms, what the mature blooms look like, etc.

Any thoughts would be appreciated -

Jackie
P.S. It has a bit of baby-rose mildew - pls excuse.

RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

I had the vague thought that it might be Souvenir de Pierre Notting, but it's been so long since I had that rose in a long-ago garden that it's more in the nature of a wild guess.

Beautiful, what ever it is. My Souv de PN died so I cannot confirm.

If my Lady Roberts grows thrives, and if it is indeed Lady Roberts and not what you have, you would be welcome to take cuttings. It's just a baby now, though.

RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

Well, I have decided to take my own advice and be patient, and wait until next Spring to see what this rose does. I found dozens of pics of LR on HMF, and darned if this rose didn't look exactly like....ONE of them, but not the others.

Then I looked up Souv de PN, and same deal - ONE of the pics looked like this rose, but not the others.

So, who knows? It will be fun finding out what it looks like, and the growth habit, when it is a bit older. I will let you know. I love tea roses - keep us guessing!

Thanks for the offer, rosefolly - I will let you know next Summer.

RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

Jackie,
Sorry for coming to this thread late. The Lady Roberts sold at the Cemetery's Open House either came from me or Gregg, who donated two or three plants for the sale. If the plant you purchased was one that I had propagated, I can guarantee you that it is a Lady Roberts as last year I didn't propagate any other apricot rose. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Karen - that is reassuring. As I said above, I am going to try and have patience, and wait until next Spring to see what this one does.

RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

Ha! I am so excited! As I said above, I took off all of the blooms and buds on this baby rose three days ago. However, the next day I noticed one tiny bud I missed. I left it, and today as I was walking by, guess what I saw? That bud had a blotch at the base of the petals! Yay!

Sounds as though the mystery is solved. Good news, Jackie

 o
RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

YEA! Good news!

Expect to find that she is an endlessly changeable lady. :-)

RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

Here is a picture of the back of the small bloom today - I am now completely convinced that it is Lady Roberts - supposed to be a darker color sport of Anna Olivier, which is exactly what this looks like. I am looking forward to its variable blooms in the future - my AO sometimes puts out blooms that look nothing like the typical ones - tea roses keep us on our toes!

I am interested in the "flower sport" issue - this bloom does not appear to have as many petals (65!) as the first few - I will be counting them when it has blown. Jeri, if you see this can you let me know how many petals your LR has, or does that vary a lot?

Jackie

 o
RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

Jackie -- I lost mine. :-( But I can count petals on photos of the one in the cemetery.

RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

Several years ago we compared a bloom from a clone of your Anna Olivia (Schmidt's Buff Giant) to the cemetery's Lady Roberts.
Here is a photo from the petal count.
Lady Roberts had 39 petals and 26 petaloids, AO had 26 petals and 19 petaloids.

RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

trying again.... it showed in the preview

 o
RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

Bah! Not working for some reason.
Try this for a link to the entire slideshow comparing the two.

Here is a link that might be useful: AO vs LR

 o
RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

jannorcal - Thanks! Those pictures are great - some of Jeri's show the very full flower with gold in the middle that I got in the first few blooms, while the rest look more like a color sport of my AO - so, now I know some of the different blooms I have to look forward to.

Also, I have noticed that the AO they have in Australia (or perhaps it is just the conditions) is frequently much darker and more saturated colors than my AO, so who knows? I feel like I am getting several roses for the price of one!

A very interesting thread----happy to hear the mystery is solved---BTW Paula if you find that paradise let me know---although the idea of moving my 80 years of collections makes me shudder---LOL

RE: for Jeri- Lady Roberts?

Today in the cemetery, some of the LR blooms were cupped and had fewer petals, and others were at least as full as the ones that Janelle counted. I didn't have the heart to tear apart any of the flowers and count - glad that Jannorcal had the info and photos and could share. Sounds like you have the same rose that we are growing in the cemetery, Jackie.

Thanks, Anita - glad to know that.
