Mrs BR Cant dropping leaves

Several weeks ago I noticed that Mrs BR Cant's leaves started turning yellow and dropping. So far about 50% of the leaves on the less-recent growth have turned yellow and fallen off. Leaves on the recent growth (about two branches) look fine. I've attached a bush shot picture of the problem.

A few weeks ago I took leaves down to our local nursery, and they did not think it was a fungal issue. Unfortunately, they did not know what it might be. While we do get a touch of blackspot in the spring, it is very unusual to get it in the late summer in Northern California. I can not find signs of blackspot or rust.

I tested the PH and it ranged from 6.5 to 7.0. Within the last month I fertilized with Dr Earth and a cup of alfalfa pellets. Any clue what might be the problem? Too much or too little water?

My next post will contain a leaf shot of the problem.

Thanks for your help,
Karen

Here is a leaf shot of the problem.

Of course I have more leaf shots and will post them if it will be helpful.

Thanks,
Karen

I had a similar looking problem with a recently planted climber. Since it was in a new spot, I was suspicious about the soil quality. I have come to believe that it was a water shortage problem, because that particular area has water-resistant soil due to high ash content. I never thought of water because others of my roses display different symptoms when not getting enough water, browning or crisping leaves. Also the sprinkler in that spot was partially clogged. I cleaned out the filter for that sprayhead and I've been watering deeply by hand, stirring the soil to encourage water absorption. The new leaves look fine to me.

I can't guarantee that your problem is the same, but it is certainly well worth looking at the water situation.

I had a Tea, Mlle. Jeanne de Philippe, that did the exact same thing with the exact same look to the leaf. Unfortunately, I never found out what the problem was. She never lost so many that she looked denuded, and she continued to bloom and look beautiful (except for yellowed and missing leaves), so I finally decided not to worry about it.

I would look first at water. The majority of the issues I'm encountering currently center around insufficient water; insufficient water holding capacity due to NO ground water and anything applied either being burned out of the soil or wicked away by other roots or dry sub soil; insufficient water due to the intensity of heat and sun. Thanks for the feedback. I've checked the water, and while it isn't dry, the plant does have less water than my other roses. Most likely due to root competition from nearby trees. I'm applying more water and will watch if that causes a change.

Thanks,
Karen
