Maggie, Spice and Perle d'Or

I have lots of moderns, but very few OGR s. I wanted to add a couple of teas as I don't currently have any and understand they do well here. Was looking for two large teas with good fragrance and good repeat for two 12 x 12 areas. I researched the teas on Petals from the Past's website and decided on Mrs BR Cant and Maman Cochet. I made the trip down there today, and they were out of Maman Cochet. I guess I wasn't thinking clearly in the 100 degree heat and extreme humidity. I decided I would pick up Maman Cochet next year for another area and got the bourbon Maggie, the China Spice and the poly Perle d'Or instead...thinking these were smaller OGRs and all 3 would fit in one of the 12 X 12 areas...triangulated with Maggie in the back and Perle d'Or and Spice in front. Looking them up on HMF now, it appears Perle d'Or can get huge, Spice looks to be more white than pink (not what I intended) and there are two different bourbons named Maggie (I think I have the found one, but not sure). Can anyone help me with info on these? Sizing of these in Zone 7 mild winters and hot, humid summers (I'm between Huntsville and Birmingham, AL)?

RE: Maggie, Spice and Perle d'Or

I have Spice now and had Perle d'Or in another garden where it grew larger than Spice, so I believe there is a definite discrepancy in size. Spice is pale pink for me only in the cool weather of spring, and after that is white and the blooms are much smaller and shatter quickly. I had considered getting rid of it because of the lackluster blooms, but do keep in mind that my climate is dry and hot, and humidity makes a big difference with roses. I like Spice for its graceful growth habit, fairly thin canes and small leaves, which give it a soft and approachable appearance. As long as it's well-watered and mulched, mine blooms quite a bit, but it does have afternoon shade. After more than 3 years it's about 4 x 4 feet.

I planted Maggie 8/10. She is now about 5' tall and 4' deep and wide. Love her deep rose tone. I have spice on order from Greenmantle for this coming spring and plan to place her next to Maggie. She will be replacing Fellinberg which was a nice rose but the color didn't work up close with Maggie.
Perle d'Or is on my list along with Mutabilis. Probably will order from Greenmantle for Spring 2015.

Pat, I was recently at the Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta. They have several Perle d'Ors there. They were about 8 feet high and at least 6 feet wide. There are three in a row in this picture.

The great news is that they were very clean. I have one in a pot ready to be planted and it has not shown any sign of blackspot all summer. Even with all this rain.

Pat, Perle d'Or is a fantastic rose here. The bud, the bloom, the blown bloom. I love her. It's my understanding she is good in a pot. Just a lovely rose.
I have Maggie on order and expect to receive her in 2 weeks.
Spice is very floriferous but I can't detect a fragrance...I agree with Ingrid regarding her growth habit.
I can't say enough about Felicia! She is a fantastic rose and so fragrant! Check her out on HMF. She's been clean and a non stop bloom machine.

Perle d'Or is an excellent rose. It can indeed get very big, but you can also keep it to a moderate size with judicious pruning. I would not advise pruning it hard, but by shaping it from time to time, you could easily keep it to a 5'x5' size, possibly even 4'x4'. Be aware that it has aggressive thorns. You will want to keep it back from passageways.

Hmm, Agressive thorns. Now I'm thinking it's the perfect spot to put between my and my neighbors yard where her kids love to come and run all over my flower beds.......

Thanks everyone! I’ve been rethinking this. I have a Marie Pavie currently in a pot that I would prefer to get in the ground. Maybe at maturity Spice and MP would be closer in size and cohesive in color. So potentially, I could put Marie Pavie and Spice in front and either Perle d’Or or Maggie behind…and put the other one somewhere else. Does that sound like a better plan?

Pat, I would definitely reserve the Perle d'Or for the lovely neighbor children. Maggie in the back and Spice and Marie Pavie in front sounds like a nice idea. Maggie peeking through will keep the two whites from looking boring in front. Some companion plants in blue or purple might complete the picture nicely.

My Marie Pavie in a TOTALLY free growing as she wants to grow reached five feet tall and about three and a half feet wide after several years. As an almost totally prickle free rose she does great at the front of a bed where people can smell her blooms and not get pricked like many roses are just waiting to do.

I certainly think that Marie Pavie and Perle d'Or would look great together.

I think I will go with plan B and put Marie Pavie in the front border. Thanks again for your help!

Susan, I looked up Felicia and she is beautiful! She's definitely being added to my ever growing wish list...

Susan, I went back to the nursery this weekend and picked up Felicia (along with Madame Lombard and Marie Van Houtte...lol). She had her first little bloom open yesterday, lovely blush pink and oh so fragrant. It had faded to white by the time I got home from work, but still a cutie. I think I'm going to love her! Thanks for the suggestion.
