Do you grow Sophie's Perpetual?

I'm looking to add another china to my gardens and I have fallen in love with pictures of the blooms of Sophie's Perpetual. I have done a search of the history on this site about her, read help me find, and googled for pictures. I'm finding conflicting comments about her growth pattern, so I thought I would do a new post to get the most current information of her growth pattern. I will be planting her in an area with plenty of room to grow, she may get a bit of late afternoon shade, but otherwise plenty of sun. I'm in 7b South Carolina. Helpmefind states she will get 6' to 8' tall and 4' to 6' wide. If this is true that would be perfect, but I read some posts that she was much smaller and had more of an outward growth than upward. She will have at least 10ft wide space, but I want her to grow tall, 6 to 8 ft would be nice as she is going to be at the bottom of a slope so I want her tall! Does anyone have one in their garden now, and if so can you tell me a bit about how she grows for you, and if you have a picture of the whole shrub it would be greatly appreciated. I'm having trouble finding a picture of one fully grown. -Thanks, Marcia

I do. Unfortunately, my SP has been in the ground for less than 6 months. It's far too early to say how large it will get. I'm personally hoping for a more compact plant, but I can deal with a larger rose in its location. The blooms are a lovely blend of pinks and red. The scent is a mix of classic rose and that spicy/green apple scent that I associate with Cecile Brunner. Given you have the space I would go for it while considering what companions may look good in the vicinity till it does fill out or if it doesn't fill out the whole allocated space.

mzstitch, 'Sophie's Perpetual' is definitely on my wish list since I really love her flowers also. You might like to send an e-mail to the folks at Roses Unlimited since they're probably fairly close to you- they're also in 7b in SC- in Laurens, SC. They are very nice, and they know their roses.

I'd imagine that they could give you some good 'local' info about how large Sophie might get for you...

Have a look at the web site at the link below... the e-mail address is about half-way down the home page.

Good luck,
Virginia

The blooms are lovely. I grow mine in a pot as it didn't seem to want to grow very much in the ground. It does quite well potted and presently, I have no plans to put it in the ground. It is a little gawky - but this might just be my plant. During winter, I may try to find a spot for it in the ground and prune it back, hoping it will fill out and grow into more of a bush.

It looks like this rose isn't very popular, perhaps theres a reason for that. Thank you for your help. Unfortunately Judith your reply is similar to some I saw in my search here. Perhaps the help me find estimates were unrealistic for most. Virginia, I'll take your advice and ask RU when I'm ready to place my full order and make a final decision there. I do order there yearly, and go pick my selections up. Jay, your words still make me want this rose for the flowers. I have a puppy who loves to dig, so I don't do much in companion plants but that certainly could be an option to consider. Thank you!

Sorry to jump in a little late, but I was holding off because my "Sophie's Perpetual" is in only its second year from a band, so I can't say much about how it will be when mature. I can say that it sure does grow in an awkward way -- new shoots often go nearly horizontal from the base, and laterals then grow up from them. If I threw down some more mulch, it would look like it was suckering.

From what I've read about it, it will look awkward for a while until it starts building upon itself. I have it where it can either remain small OR get big, and work fine either way. The important thing for me about it going where I have it is that it's thornless. And its blooms smell great. So far, in my no-spray NJ garden, I'd say it gets only mild blackspot, and not until about this time of year. It never defoliated like some of the others I'm growing.

I grow her, but she hasn't grown very big, slow grower maybe?
I do like her flowers, very beautiful, just wish they were bigger :) I would call RU and see what they say as well.I did get mine from a band. Good Luck!
