Westside Road Cream Tea

Westside Road Cream Tea came to me from Rogue Valley, as a "free" rose. I chose it because it has a reputation for being compact and suitable for keeping in a pot. I've said before, this really isn't the best place for Teas, but my Tea- lust is so bad that I just refuse to give up easily. I have been really pleased and surprised by it's performance...so far
Balling is a potentially major issue here, but WRCT hasn't had a single balled bloom, which is astonishing, considering the tissue-like appearance of its petals. It rained heavily at least twice in August, followed by days of foggy high humidty and HEAVY dews, continuing into September. In spite of this, every bud has opened- and there have been a LOT of buds! Really, I'm amazed. However, realist that I am, I'm prepared to eat my words- things can always go wrong. As always, I'm very curious to hear what other people have experienced with it.
Does anyone here know anything about its history? I'm assuming that the Westside Road in question is the one in Sonoma County. When was it "found"? Are there any strong candidates for it's identity?

Zachary.

Don't know its history but it is wonderful in the Sacramento cemetery in partial shade. The blooms were HUGE this spring. I gave a tour to a group of very senior citizens who rode in our electric golf cart. When we got next to this rose they leaped out of the cart to go examine it. The rose has a very nice tea fragrance too - they were so excited by it. Glad it is doing well for you, too.

I also received this rose from Rogue April 2012. My location is a bit north of you and I am located at the very bottom of South Puget Sound.
The rose is planted in my garden in a protected location. Like your experience, mine is the same. One point that I have noticed on Help me find it states that this rose is compact as in under 4'. Mine is 6-7' tall at one year old.
Blooms were about 4" this spring. This summer due to dryness the blooms are smaller. If I watered more this wouldn't be an issue; but I water once a week or so with porous soil.
Great rose and free. It doesn't get better.

I chose Westside Road Cream Tea as my free rose from RVR based on the assumption it would stay on the smaller side - around 4' tall is what I was planning for. But now I read that Jeannie's reached 6-7' and am interested in hearing from others who grow it.

It is the only tea I have (so far). I hope it will be a good one for me!

Jeannie, my mouth dropped open at that. Ooh lawd, I may have to find a better place to put my WRCT if it's going to get that big! THANK YOU!

Jeannie, that's impressive! But, I'm not hopeful that mine will ever get that big. I think you do get more warmth in the summer than I do here- even 10 miles inland from me, the summer temps are a minimum of 10-15 degrees warmer...with clear skies.

Here is a picture of a bloom which opened after heavy rain battered the bud, while a huge FAT bud on Baronne Henriette Snoy balled and covered itself in mold. WOW...bestill my Tea-lusting heart!

Here it is as a cut flower, with Mrs. John Laing and sweetpeas.

Add me to the list of those who ordered WRCT because it was reported to remain relatively small. Now near the end of its second season, it's apparent that mine soon will outgrow its space. I've not decided if it will be moved early next spring, or if I'II move some adjacent plants to give WRCT more room. Now Jeannie's report above throws me into even more of a quandary.

IIRC, Ingrid was the enabler who caused my impulvsive purchase of WRCT (simultaneous with "Romaggi Plot Bourbon"). I think she reported here that her specimen also is proving to be larger than expected. I hope she will check in here to give a current report.

Ours is in a lot of shade in the Sacramento cemetery and is still under three feet tall after several years.

Now that I'm reading it has MONSTER POTENTIAL, I'm interested! (Don't like anything that's not bigger than I am). The color and bloom form are divOON! And the size of the bloom is a plus, too.

Sounds like this one loves heat AND humidity: two things of which I can provide plenty... And the shade tolerance just adds icing to the cake (or, in this case, considering the frothy appearance of the bloom, whipped cream to the mousse).

Well it is larger than stated on HELPMEFIND for sure. I wonder if that is because I mulched it with 4" of horse manure when planted and then added 4 more inches in the fall of 2012 and again spring of 2013? I use no other fertilizer.
Zjw..the bloom in your vase looks the same as mine. Your Ms Lang just put her to the top of my Spring order along with Bardou Job. Thank you.
