| French Fireworks-A Blaze of Beauties Rare French Roses Available NOW from Vintage Gardens Greetings! We've been working hard to confirm all of our French Import rose orders and are now releasing a large number of plants that were produced in excess of the requests we received in 2010 and 2011. This will be a one-time event for Vintage Gardens, as we continue our plans to close our doors once all of our orders are shipped at the end of May, 2014. Many fine roses remain available on our website and we hope that these old French roses will not distract you from looking once more at all that we have still to offer-roses you will not likely see available in commerce for a long time to come. The list below includes all French roses we are making available at 9 AM PDT on Sunday, September 22nd, 2014. We will upload these for ordering online at that time, and will NOT accept orders placed or emailed earlier than that time. We do have fairly large numbers of most of these roses, and, unlike our ONE of a KIND sales, we do not anticipate them selling out immediately. We think that if you place your orders on that day, you will likely receive most of what you request. Many of these varieties have been somewhat overlooked. Over the past two years of studying and appreciating the imported French roses, I have become very fond of many of them; they are my new rose loves. For what it may be worth to you I have marked those roses in bold in this list. I am drawn to roses that are fragrant, exquisite of form and color, and that, as plants make a generous display when in bloom. So many of you have asked 'what are your favorites' and this is MY list! We would like to thank the customers who supported us in the effort to bring these beautiful old roses, and the roses of Fabien Ducher to America. Not only were they there when we needed the help to do so, but in receiving their confirmations, missing numerous varieties that we had lost or that had simply failed to produce the cuttings we needed to fill orders, they have generously opted to select from this list to complete their orders. Without their help we would be hard pressed to close Vintage Gardens with honor and with grace. Although we will no longer offer these varieties, we are doing all that we can to see to it that they are distributed to public gardens around the country that work to preserve old roses. Through these gardens, and through a few small brave nurseries who will grow them, notably Pam Greenewald's Angel Gardens in Florida, we hope that they will continue in commerce in the years to come. Thank you for your support of Vintage Gardens over these past 30 years. We are pleased we could share with you a world of beauty, history and joy. | I need another rose like a hole in the head and I am getting 6 of the imports but yes, I've got a beauty in mind for 9 AM. |
| From my POV, the only item of interest in the Vintage announcement is the statement, " . . . as we continue our plans to close our doors once all of our orders are shipped at the end of May, 2014." I hope that's an indication that some of their old, unfilled custom orders remain "in the pipeline". |

| Is Mme Letuve Colnet the same as Mme Isaac Pereire? I noticed in Vintage's description that the color doesn't match what the real Letuve was, a lilac pink Also, it seems they received possible mislabeled roses. |
| Good question, Mauvegirl. The consensus seems to be that the rose known today as 'Madame Létuvé de Colnet' is actually a mystery rose. The Vingtage description, HMF and Dickerson's "The Old Rose Advisor" concur that the original rose was lilac in color, not the cherry red of the rose now offered as MLdC. The mix-up appears to have occurred at La Roseraie du Val-de-Marne (L'Haÿ). Unfortunately, Sangerhausen (the other great European repository of roses) does not have MLdC in its collection, so there's no other specimen to be viewed as a comparison. Whatever the rose now masquerading as MLdC is, it looks and sounds pretty wonderful. Its true identity, though, will probably always remain a mystery. |

| I ordered Earl of Eldon. We'll see if I actually get it, though. It'd be nice to have this rose for the cemetery. Josh |
| Earl of Eldon...come with me to the Casbah! Has anyone here ever actually seen or grown this rose? A potential head-turner for sure- that color combo makes me weak in the knees. I can't help but wonder if it's one of those mildewy sort of things... |

| Just tried to order. Everything worked until I hit "next" after putting in all the address information, and it sent me to the Albas section. It's done that on two browsers now. Anyone else having such a problem? |
| System overload? For Vintage's sake, I hope so. |

| The poly, Jeanne d'Arc, looks nice. I wish I could order, but with $30 in shipping/inspection fees, I don't really want to spend $60 on one plant. Filling the box up with three more will bring the grand total to $150 for four plants. Um...nah. Probably a good deal for you CA folks, though.

| same problem, gave up too pricey for a band |
| Earl of Eldon doesn't appear "coppery orange with purple shadings" in any of the few photos on HMF. Knowing how light tints such as this appears, have performed in my climate, I honestly don't need another "buff" flower. If it was REALLY "coppery orange with purple shadings", like several of the old Pernetianas can be, it might be worth considering...Kim |

| I put my order in for just a few.....I shouldn't have but the chance at a few rare ones beat out "common sense". Wonder if they will add any roses to the list as time goes by, seeing as how the last shipping date will be May 2014? |

| I ordered Cornélie (noisette, Moreau-Robert, 1858). I do not know just how enormous this rose will become in my yard? One photo showed a bush that appeared large enough to take over a small house. I figured if I have to pull a couple of plants out to give it room, oh well....It will be my first noisette and plant from Vintage. I hope it thrives. Lynn |
| I was also taken to the Albas page. Ah well, I hope the Earl goes to a good home. Josh |
| I finally e-mailed Gregg since I hadn't received confirmation of my order before it was opened for general purchase, and he answered promptly and thanked me for naming so many alternates, which leads me to believe that I won't be getting the rose I really wanted....oh well. At least it will be interesting to have a rose that hasn't been grown here before. Apparently they're quite backed up because Gita is now working only every other week. Ingrid |
| I got confirmation the other day from Gita, am getting replacement roses Silver Queen and Salmon Wings, will ship Sept. 30. I was so disappointed, but who knows, it may be that I love these even more than the originals! |

| Yay! Lyn, I'm glad you are trying a Noisette. I ordered quite a few....too many really. I'm hoping that I will be able to live off selling cut roses when I retire..... Susan |

| Does anyone know how many of the imports survived to become part of the Friends of Vintage garden? I know some did not and some did not propagate well enough to sell. There are some beautiful roses on the list. I am hoping that they survive in the 'friends' garden and will someday be available again. I'd love to see them in person one day. |

| I've seen them but haven't counted them. It looks like a good number of healthy plants. For now they are still in pots. |
| I had hoped to see some of them myself at the monthly volunteer day at Vintage. However, it was cancelled this past weekend due to rain. Rosefolly |

| Malcom~ I have frequently had problems with the order system at VG, especially on SALE mornings. I just set up an email, fill in the listed choices, with the other required billing, shipping, alternates info, agree to terms, etc. and email after the start time. It's frustrating to lose the placement timing at the near end of the order! Judy |
