Ingrid,

I was wondering if your Oneto Home Saffron Tea is doing well?

Josh, I'm sure it would have been if a gopher hadn't eaten the roots early on. I remember seeing one flower, but the plant wasn't mature so I couldn't really judge the quality from that one bloom. I was really sick about it. Usually I catch gopher activity early on because I check my roses every day, but this was an extra-sneaky devil.

It wasn't one of the very vigorous, fast-growing roses, but still grew at a decent pace, especially for a yellow tea.

I had a Vintage band and it was growing well in a pot, putting on new growth and even a bloom. Then, for whatever reason, it started to decline and die. The stems were thin anyway......I hated to lose it but don't know what went wrong. The bloom was pretty. Hope yours does well.

Mine is still okay, though both Souvenir de Pierre Notting and Emily Gray did the same thing Alameda's Oneto Home Saffron did. In fact Emily Gray never even made it out of the pot. Roses sometimes just do that.

With hot and cold running gophers here, I now plant all new roses and high-value perennials in gopher baskets. I continue to lose plants that are important to me because the were planted directly into the soil back in our pre-gopher days. We used to have an outside cat. She was actually too old to hunt, but the gophers didn't know that and left our garden alone. After she was gone, the ominous mounds began to appear and life has never been the same.

I could use a good barn cat or two in the back yard.

Alameda's remark about the thin stems on "Oneto Home Saffron" reminded me of Fred Boutin's assertion that this found rose is actually the China, 'Queen Mab'. I'm wondering if anyone else has investigated that possibility or ventured an opinion.

I've regretted not placing a custom order request with Vintage for OHS. I did place a custom order for 'Queen Mab' with Greenmantle, but it's been almost two years & I've heard nothing -- altho I have received a number of other roses from Marissa since ordering QM. I think its time for me to follow-up with her.

Ah, Ingrid, I am sorry to hear that. It seemed like such a unique plant. It must have been frustrating to have a glimpse of its potential then have those gophers interfere.

Is there any retail source available for this beauty? I would love to have it for the cemetery.

RE: Ingrid re: Oneto Home Saffron

Nope, no commercial sources, Josh. Perhaps someone who purchased it from Vintage will send you a cutting. Seems it's essentially an unknown, untested rose. Why not focus on the tried and true for your cemetery project -- at least in the initial stages?

Jaxondel,

As it stands that is my plan. I have a list of roses that makes up the core of the collection, and they are all hardy, disease resistant, and bloom machines for my climate. Once these are settled in however I would like to pursue the prospect of including uncommon cultivars.

I received a band of "Oneto Home Saffron" last year. It is certainly not going like a ball of fire. I was afraid I would lose it last winter (some dieback), but it came back and has been making steady progress, though still only about 9" x 1' and in a pot. I'll keep babying it along.

The leaves on "Oneto" certainly have a China look about them but, unlike the photos of 'Queen Mab' on HMF, the blooms on mine are consistently more orange and have never shown the slightest tinge of pink, nor do the "Oneto" photos on HMF show any pink (mine will now, of course, show an incredible amount of pink on its very next bloom...). The buds also, in the 'Queen Mab' photos, look different.

Josh, I received mine from Paul Barden, who wanted to test this rose in different gardens. I don't know whether he has any at this point since this was some years ago.

Rosefolly, try South Bay Barn Cats, a rescue organization.

South County Barn Cats shared a link.
Natural rodent control, anyone? There are a number of barn cats currently available at the shelter in San Martin. Call 408-686-3900 for more information.
