In April of 2013 I planted a Zephirine Drouhin own-root rose. I can't believe that little one gallon plant is the monster it is today! I know ZD is considered a climber, so I expected it to get tall, but I am fairly certain it is already close to 10 ft. wide. I used to have one planted on the north side of my house, because it is supposed to do good in a shady spot and it did bloom fairly good, but never got very big, and while I thought it would get bigger than it did on the north side, I wasn't expecting it to get as big as it is already. I'm not complaining, I would like to know which old garden roses have a tendency to get really huge and some that don't get quite as big, so I can plan a little better in the future.

This is a tough one . . . To a great degree, the answer will be specific to your climate and conditions, so, answers from any of us in radically-different environments won't be helpful. Jeri in Coastal Southern California

Sara Ann, I got my ZD last year, too, and am amazed at how much it has grown in a such a short period of time...more so, than any of my other new OGRs that are supposed to be monsters in time. I planned to grow mine as a large, free standing shrub, along with several other big guys, between our "yard" and my brother-in-law's "yard" but have already had to put a support behind it to lift it up some...my BiL kept mowing over the cane tips that had begun visiting him years sooner than I had expected they would. Thank goodness it is thornless, or I would be scared of it (I'm a bit intimidated by of all those canes going everywhere even without the thorns).

SA, I'd say that it's probably best for planning purposes to double the estimated sizes… However, if we have a winter like the last one, who knows! Most roses are going to grow much more slowly than ZD though. Susan

Thank you everyone. Pat - Apparently ZD can get really big! I've been thinking the same thing, and am sure thankful it doesn't have thorns. Hopefully it will be loaded with blooms next spring. Susan - Your idea makes a lot of sense.
