Flower size of Ducher and Spice

How large are the flowers on these roses? I had Ducher up north years ago but I'm not sure if I had the right rose because that bush's flowers were as small as a mini and not very shapely. I am considering trying either Ducher or Spice in a pot.

Ducher has shapely 2 inch flowers for the most part. He is a very healthy bush in my no-spray garden and has great bloom in cooler weather. In fact I fell in love with him at our botanical garden at a Christmas party in 2011 which was very mild. He was blooming along with the sasanqua camellias! I had him in a large pot but moved him to the garden as he grew like crazy! Sadly, not a very good cutting rose.

I read someplace that the blooms on Ducher fry in the heat.

I have had Spice in a pot for a little over a year and a half. It grows very easily here in N. Central Florida. I bought it in about a half gallon size pot and it is now about 20 " tall and 30" wide. The flowers have been around 2" for me and has bloomed about 4 times a year with little or no fertilizer.

I have Spice in the ground and in my hot garden it looks best in the spring, when the flowers are pinkish color and about 2 inches, as g-in-fl mentions. In the heat the blooms are white, smaller and rather nondescript. It has good rebloom and is a bushy plant with no disease for me. I've grown rather fond of it although it's not one of the stars of the garden.

Here for me on the gulf coast of Texas Ducher makes 3" blooms and Spice 2". Ducher has grown into a large (5') healthy bush that blooms well in spring and fall with some scatterings in summer. Spice is a low growing plant, and blooms well in spring and fall, less in our heat but mine also looses all her leaves each summer, not attractive.

Peggy, here is a shot taken a number of years ago in north Alabama comparing Ducher, left, and Spice, right. Ducher was always a tad bit smaller than Spice, which had pink overtones in cooler weather. Gean

I wondered where you've been, Peggy. I haven't seen you post in awhile.

RE: Flower size of Ducher and Spice

I haven't had much success growing roses for a while. I had all kinds of problems with chili thrips here in southwest FL. I lost all of them! :-( After a year I tried one more rose - Archduke Charles. If this one died I was gonna say to heck with it and try other things. Charles seems to be surviving so now I'm gonna try a couple more and see if I can have better luck this time.

Good luck, Peggy. I hope the chili thrips stay far away from your garden and roses. What are you thinking about trying this time? Anything other than Ducher or Spice? Gean

Thank you all for the info and pic of Spice. I have her on order from Greenmantle and she should be here Spring 2014. The planned spot will be just right.

Spice does great in my garden. The plant is wildly healthy here. I think you'll like her.
Nice, shapely 2 inch blooms in the spring and fall here, sometimes with a little tinge of color.
In the warmer/summer months, not a showy plant at all ... one inch solid white blooms that are much looser formed.

Randy,
you know that the reason I took that picture comparing those two a long time ago is because you were talking about what were the differences. I had both so took the picture, I still remember it, but I am not sure I ever told you that your conversation was the reason I took it. Gean

Good luck this time, Peggy. So far I have remained clear of the dreaded chilli thrips.

I'm not far from Randy, and Spice also does very well in my garden. It's in partial sun/dappled shade and probably blooms less than his. It has a delicate airy appearance. The blooms are small and pale pink. My Ducher is more robust, also with small flowers; the foliage is beautiful and the bush is well-shaped. Spice's foliage is also beautiful, but different. Ducher doesn't appear willowy and delicate - more like happy and healthy and energetic. I love both of them. Lou

I'm also considering Rosette Delizy. I'm going to slowly add a rose here and there to see how it goes. I don't want to fork over a lot more money until I feel confident I can keep those darn chili thrips at bay.

I have chili thrips and have lost some roses because of them, in my no-spray garden....... the roses that seem to shrug them off are the chinas, noisettes, and most of the old teas...the 'moderns' struggle and some have given up and died..... I have Ducher on one side of the walkway and Spice on the other and they are usually blooming all summer, no chili thrips, even tho' the blooms are much smaller in the heat, they are blooming, and the foliage is clean, no BS... also Louis Philippe is there in the front and puts on a good show...Prosperity blooms nicely and no thrip damage.... Belinda's Dream has chilit thrips but keeps blooming tho' the blooms are smaller.... it has not been a good summer, at all... if I didn't have companion plants out there, it would be not much to look at....Blood Leaf, Blue Salvia, and a few others provide the color now... but I notice that the new growth is coming in fairly clean so guess there is still hope! LOL, sally
